I'm a little concerned about my initial weight loss. I'm 5'11 180lbs. In the first week, yes first week of working out I have lost 8 lbs. I feel great, have been eating 5 meals a day and am not taking any diet pills. I have been doing a light workout with weights, sort of a circuit training session and running 2 miles 6 times a week. I am not pushing myself and feel comfortable with this plan. I have read alot of articles about initial weight loss and I did not think it would be so much in just 1 week. I'm not complaing as I need to lose about 10 more pounds. I am just curious about this rapid weight loss.

Are you male or female? If female, are you just coming off your cycle?
I hope, REALLY hope, that much of this "weight" loss is water. How are your meals, really? Something is not healthy here - especially at your height/weight. What exactly did you change a week ago to make this happen? -------------- _Shane I dont have to outrun the bear - just you.... |

mp1li...When I started working out, mostly cardio with circuits as well, I gained 5 lbs and then quickly dropped it off within a week. For me I think it was water weight, especially since I wasn't used to drinking that much water. So if drinking water wasn't new to you then it was probably just water weight. You'll probably see it level out at about 1-3 lbs a week after the first week or 2.

Spamalope, I am a 33 yr old male. Honestly, I eat a eggs in the morning for breakfast. Mid morning snack is a low fat cheses stick, lunch is turkey sandwich and some fruit for a afternoon snack. Diner is a well balenced meal, either chicken or steak, veggy's and salad. I'm only drinking water, and alot of it, so I think it's all water weight. I drink a protien shack before and after my workouts.

8#s of water would be nearly 5% of your 180# body weight - thats A LOT (read: a mega wicked lot) of water to lose percentage wise - especially over a consistent period of time.
Do you think it is possible that your first scale reading was wrong, or abnormally high or something? For example, did you: (1) drink 1/2 gallon of milk after a big steak & potatoe meal & put on an artic parka and then... (2) jump on the scale and then... (3) pee, poop, strip, and run around sweating for a week? I'm trying to be humorous but seriously.... I've been in the ER >>>FOUR<<< times for dehydration (embarrassing) - it's a serious thing and I can't imagine 5% in body weight without being loaded in the first place. -------------- _Shane I dont have to outrun the bear - just you.... |

Don't forget that scales lie. I have an expensive digital scale that says I'm 3 pounds lighter after a few hours. Scales are good for a monthly checkup but if you want accuracy believe a tape measure.-------------- If I had a boat, Id go out on the ocean. If I had a pony ; Id ride it on my boat. Add-on to Charlie's post.
You need to weigh yourself at the same or close to the same time of day. Weight can fluctuate a lot, if I weigh myself in the morning and then in the evening I can weigh as much as 4lbs more depending on... oh all sorts of things:laugh: How humid it is for example, I tend to retain alot of water when it is very hot and humid. Also, for us women the time of the month, etc. I normally weigh myself about once a month and only in the mornings:big_smile: Leslie |

============
Quoting from sivysivy: Spamalope- Did you have any symptoms with your dehydration... ============= In general, I wasn't taking very good care of myself (duh). A general loss of alertness, reduction, and getting dizzy were signs. Right before I passed out I would get extremely dizzy, get tunnel vision, and then whammy. I can't say though that there were prolonged symptoms that I felt - it more or less would be a dizzy spell and then "oh, crap..." There was weight loss and at the time I was over weight and that loss probably helped encourage the behavior, to be honest. With that said though, on each occassion there were additional leading causes that I ignored such as abnormally hot climate which this New Englander can't handle (stationed in midwest at the time) and not increasing my fluids, drinking alcohol a lot (which can act as a "dietaretic" - sp? sorry Lecter :laugh:). The last time it happened, it was pretty serious and I had some significant injuries from the fall - ambulance, the whole nine yards. It was a real scare. When my 4 yr old son and DW showed up at the hospital, it brought me to tears. I FINALLY placed this concern high on my priority list. So hopefully, that explains my passion around this. Mild dehydration is as low as 1-2 % body weight, severe dehydration is 9-15% and life threatening as it puts you at risk of "Sudden Death" syndrome. Been there... -------------- _Shane I dont have to outrun the bear - just you.... |
