I have been told that it is much more effective to frequently change your routine so your body doesn't get "used to" what you're doing...what is the best way to do this? Is there a timeframe recommendation? for example, what if for two weeks I focused my strength training on more functional movements (squats, lunges, presses for upper body) and then for the next two weeks focused on targeting specific muscles? Would this be a good plan?

every 4 to 5 weeks switch the excercises.......

4 weeks squats normal next 4 weeks close stance or wide stance squats.

4 weeks db curls.......next 4 weeks pretcher curls or concentration curls.

Every workout i pick 2 core lifts......meaning they use more than one joint to move.....squats, lunges, rows, benching, military presses

I follow the 2 core lifts with 2 isolation lifts

example
bench press 4 sets
incline db press 4 sets
incline db fly 3 sets
cable cross overs 3 sets

next 4 weeks
db bench press 4 sets
incline bb press
laying cable flys on ball 4 sets
close grip press
