Same muscles how many days a week

with my school weightlifting program we lift monday wednesday and thursday. we usually do bench monday and wednesday is this too much too close together? i've heard you're only supposed to work the same muscle once a week or at least wait a while before you work it again. should the second time be more of a light workout? i usually try to do every exercise as hard as i can but i was wondering if maybe i should take it a bit easier. my bench has gone up 20-30 pounds since february i dont know if that much of an increase or not for that amount of time.
i've always just gone with whatever my coach says (he is afterall the second most successful in the history of va) but i would like some advice on this. we pretty much to close to full body every day we lift. i could probably get a copy of the workout if needed.
i just want to make sure i get the most out of lifting that i possibly can
