Saying that im very depressed cuz the AVERAGE time in a high school scouting combine is 4.6
I wish to improve does any one have any suggestions i work out about 4 times a week, and this will help me very much please,

An excercise I did in the marines was called mountain climbers..... Not quite sure how to explain it but it works great.... :)

That is disapointing I ran the 40 in 4.5 at a body weight of 320 in high school. You need to strenghten your legs. Also Start low almost falling forward explode then rise up as you get down the lane.

40 yard dash 5 seconds

I suggest you start doing
Deadlifts/Stiff Legged Deadlifts
Squats
Power Cleans
Deadlifts will give you strong foundation and increased leg power.....power cleans will teach you body to work in synergy to produce much more power...
Ofcourse running sprints is also required....you may want to buy some Chutes.......
try doing
10 sets of 40yard(or 100 meters for a change)...rest 30-45 seconds.....keep decreasing rest time between workouts by 3-5 seconds.....

This is kind of off topic, but I've always wondered why football uses the 40 yard dash for comparison purposes. That distance seems arbitrary to me... why not the 100, or something even longer that would not only give an idea of how fast they are, but also be a better indication of endurance?

Because endurance of distance is different than endurance of amount. A person who has a good 40y time could probably do 20-30+ times a day. But a guy like me who focuses on longer distances (I am not a sprinter) will consistantly get a bad time on a 40 all day long.

In 40yard the msot important factor is how quickly you can accelerate/accomplish break away speed........which is good b/c you can avoid being hit and/or outrunning others for short distances....
