Hi I am 26 yrs old and I have decided that I want to start boxing. I wanted to know if anyone here is a boxer and can give me some general pointers before I join a boxing gym. I have one in mind already. I wanted to know which muscles i should build(weight train) to help me have the knock out punch. I am 5'6 150lbs. I am not tall so I will need to use my power to my advantage. please let me know what you think. And if you think I have a chance at going pro. Thanks for your help!

Olympic lifting develops the most pure power in the body...(snatch, power clean, etc)
Big compound exercises develop many muscles simulatenously and may help you achieve your goal. (squats, deadlifts, dips, rows)
I don't understand how as a complete beginner at 26....you're asking people who have never seen you box if you have a shot at going pro....I mean sure 1/10000000.....chance? yes...likelyhood? you have better shot to be struck by lightning(sorry for being brutally honest, but I think it's delusional to think otherwise)....I mean I am sure with dedication you can become good...but it will take a lot of time and effort...
I think it's better if you look at boxing as mean for getting in shape, stress relief, learning to defend yourself, etc....rather than as a future career....

Work your neck and shoulders especially. Fitness also has alot to do with it, if you cant stay in for the whole time each round you are screwed. Do a lot of jogging and skip rope and shadowboxing.

very good point koi...boxing is about as much of conditioning, agility, footwork, and other fundamentals as it is about pure strength or power....

I want to thank all of you for your responses. I guess i just have to go to the gym and see what happens. I wanted to know if reach and height make a big difference in boxing. for example. I am 5'6 i weigh about 145 lbs i am pretty stocky. But is it better to be 5'10 145 lbs and weak or be strong at 5'6? I am assuming strength will win? I am sorry if some of my questions seem odd but i am trying to figure out if I have a shot or not. Thank you also for the weight training tips.

Yes...reach is huge in boxing....best fighters use their jab to keep you at a distance so that you can't use your power....there are always exceptions to the rule....but generally speaking reach is a huge advantage to have...
