Hi folks.

I live in the mountains far from any kind of gym, I am presently doing some weight training with free weights & some dumbbells but have to work without a partner. I cant go heavy without somebody to spot for me so am not progressing. Any ideas that can help?

Take care

build or buy a cage....with adjustable pins every 2-3 inches...which has a safety system(bars you place at a level of choice which will catch the falling bar...somewhere above your body)....

smith machine is also a possibility if you can afford it...

using chains and bands for addition weight...on top of the barbell....so for example if you need to bench 400...you can use 200lb weights and 200 on top using either chains or bands...to get you to the 400 total...

you can also be creative...you can tie a rope or whatever to the barbell and measure it out pefectly...so that at full extension (from somewhere at the ceiling...or beam or some other secure place...which can handle considerable weight)....the rope holds the weight directly over your body...maybe like an inch above......so it lets you go through your range of motion but if you suddenly drop the weight it will catch it at that inch above your body......

Thanks Menace, I will certainly try some of your suggestions, esp the cage I will look into it this comming week. I think since I am 47yrs old and really only have one lung to work with 400 may remain just a dream.

Thanks again & take care

pchuck I am about your age and workout alone. I use clips because when you dump the plates they would tear up my laundry room floor. I just lift a little lighter and use bands . My cage is really great but you can still hurt yourself with it. I am really careful to be sure I can handle the load before I move up. You'll get there...just takes a little longer.

lol...

yea bands are a great idea...Gene Reycheck...achieved 1005 bench...by lifting with bands for most workouts.....I heard most workouts he doesn't go beyond 400-500 lb in free weights...rest of it is made up by bands....which is easier on the joints, less risk of injury, easier on the body....

look into this... www.elitefts.com....
