Hey all...Been working out and watching diet for about 3 weeks now. I went to my gym to have new measurements done and apparently either the first guy or the girl that did it today didn't do it right. According to their paperwork I went from 22% to 26% BF. :surprised: So one of them didn't know what they were doing...no big deal. So I really have no idea where I'm at. I know I haven't lost any weight, but felt I must have been losing inches...well they apparently all measure differently and they can't tell.

Anyways she was giving me her sales pitch to get me to pay for her as a personal trainer for $600 for 10 sessions and essentially saying that I could lose my 15-20 lbs in 3 weeks with her help. They do get very involved with diet, but I think it's only so they can sell me a bunch of bars and stuff...which might not be a bad thing even though I'm not a fan of them.

Should I reasonably expect to lose that much weight that fast or is she just trying to suck some money out of me? I'm pushing myself in every workout and don't know that she'll do anything more for me that I can't do for myself. I told her what my workout was and she felt shocked that I wasn't getting more cardio. I get 7 minutes of cardio, and 20-30 minutes of high pace weights (circuit training), then another 7 minutes on the bike and I'm done...and I do this 3 days a week.

Should I keep doing what I'm doing and just watch my diet closer and save my $600 or does it sound like I need more help?

sounds like this particular gym like 24 hours...type gyms...just want to get you to buy their stuff....personal trainers are helpful but....so they can create a program for you... and show you correct form for all the exercises.....and watch you for a couple of sessions....60 dollars a session is a joke...find some other place....

15-20lb in 3 weeks is a bad idea....in terms of weight loss...you will lose a lot of muscle....good diets can only help you lose about 1-2 lb a week....so that is a max of 6 pounds in 3 weeks......20-30 minutes of circuit training is good...but I would try for 30-45 minutes....20 minutes sounds maybe like a little too short...I would do the 5 minute light cardio beforehand and then do 30-45 minutes of moderate cardio afterwards....if you know how to do the exercises....then the diet tips you can find on this site...

save the 600 is the bottom line....

Bingo we have a winner....You pegged the gym dead on. You win a protien bar!

Kind of what I thought. One more thing that I was curious about. They have this test they do that is mandatory when you get a personal trainer to check you metabolic rate accurately. It cost 50 and they're nice enough to throw in a lot of bars and stuff as incentive. Can this test be taken elsewhere for cheaper and is it worth it? Didn't catch the name of it...something you breath or blow into.

Ahha...it was called the BodyGem. Are these accurate and effective and is $50 a reasonable price? Or is there another way I can get this done?

sstump1.. the best scale is the measuring tape and mirror.. don't worry about ur body fat and all that right now.. if i were u... i'd go work out for about 2-3 months.. get my form of different exercises right.. do them for couple more months and then see the results...

From what I've seen, you can get just as much information and assistance by asking Qs here at FT and talking to other lifters in the gym. Personal trainers are OK if you're feeling totally lost or need motivation, though.

most of them are underqualified and gung-ho which can actually be a detriment. mzakal is absolutely right...this website and simply paying attention to your body are probably going to be more effective than listening to some weekend warrior trainer.

Ye I had a feeling...that gym is more concerned about getting people to sign up for various offers than actually help people...I was thinking about working there to start but I would hate to be doing their sales pitch garbage....

those 'trainers' are piss poor....they require all trainers to pass their own test....weeklong with no prior experience and that's it....they do pay more to people with other certifications but many of them are very ignorant...one time I brought my friend in to workout with my guest pass...and I heard so much nonesense...that I jsut started laughing...zat which he told me 'we can do it the easy way or the hardway if I am gonna be an A*'....

just save your money...those bars cost nothing to them...they get them at huge discounts....and overprice them at the gym so what you think u're getting ...u;re not....

just save the money use their facilities which are pretty good....but skip all their own crap...just forget about it...required test? somehow I doubt it...I am a member at 24hrs albeit having been there in 6 months...and I never had to do any of this....they didn't even bother giving me orientation when I told them it was unncessary....

Also it kills me when I see flabby guys walking around as personal trainers in 24 hours....it's a joke to me....flabby 18 year olds....

sorry let me clarify...they require all guests to sit through about 30-45 minutes of sales pitch and orientation to use the guest pitch...however they waive this if you pay them 15$...which I think is halrious...'Uh we're gonna feed this crap for half hour and you'll feel like we stole your time...or you pay us 15$..'...it's an utter joke...I am thinking about cancelling my membership there....although I probably will need it for about another year before cancelling and signing up as an alum of my university's gym....

Yea I picked it on location and just walked in and signed up...never heard their sales pitch at all until I went to get my measurements redone. And the $50 for the bodygem test isn't to join the club, but to work with a personal trainer. I've decided against both and am increasing my cardio and now getting there at 5:30 in the morning, cause I have to be at work at 7. So that'll give me the extra 30 minutes of cardio.

Think I'm gonna go to 5 days a week (in 2 or 3 weeks due to other obligations) with 3 days circuits and cardio and 2 days weight training. So I'm sure I'll have a ton of other questions in the near future. Already learned a ton about fitness from this site and plan to learn a ton more.

Thanks everyone for your advice...now I'll split the $600 amongst ya.

sstump1.. ur welcome to ask questions.. we all will be glad to help u.. just a suggestion.. don't do 5 days non stop.. give a rest of 1 day after 2 or 3 days.. ur body needs rest to recover from the pounding u've given to it :).. and it sure is a BIG joke in these gyms.. i had to wait 2 weeks to get the orientation session.. cuz without that they were not allowing me to exercise (safty resons LOL).. and then the orientation was given to me by a person who just "went through" everything in 15 min.. and then offered his services to be booked as personal trainers..

oh and yeah.. he also wanted me to join his karate classes hahahahaha:big_smile:

Would it still be an issue with just strict Cardio (no circuits)on 3 days and Weight Training on 2? Essentially it would be Cardio on Mon/Wed/Fri and then do the weight training like Legs on Tuesday, and arms on Thursday...and abs everyday pretty much. Would that be considered overtraining?

Unfortunately I picked a gym close to my work and not my house, so I probably won't be driving up here on the weekends to work out (because of the 30 min drive) so Sat/Sun are my days off to play with my kids.

yup that is over training.. especially ur abs.. abs are muscles just like any other group.. and they need rest.. doing them everyday would have them overtrained...

u said legs on tuesday and arms on thursday.. what about chest and back?.. arn't u gonna do them?.. why don't u do it this way:

mon: chest + biceps
tue: cardio + abs
wed: back + triceps
thu: rest
fri: legs + abs
sat: cardio
sun: rest

it'll work out whole of ur body and also give ur msucles time to recover... just my thought....

 Good stuff. See told ya I would have a lot of questions about weight training.

I've still got a considerable amount of fat to burn. Is 2 days of cardio going to suffice or should I wait until I get rid of a bit more of it before starting with this program? I'm 5'4", and 164 lbs...not as big as I sound, built fairly stocky and most of the weights in the gut. Yes I am also watching my diet considerably closer then I was prior to 3 or 4 weeks ago.
