Hey guys and gals. This site has helped me out a lot in the past and I figured I could use some advice on my cardio routine.

I've been doing cardio for the past 3 years now and I have finally reached my goal of being able to jog to the closest boulevard to my house. It's about 8 - 8.5 km total (one trip there and back) and I did it at an average of 8.7km/hr with an average heart rate at 174 bpm! I was really impressed with this data. When I thought about it I realized that it's no piece of cake to keep yourself that fit and jogging sucha distance is both a mental and physical test.

So my question is this: Now that I have reached my goal, can I go further, should I go further, do I really need to go further? Is 174 bpm at 8.7km/hr good, average or what? Finally, if I mix in swimming or biking (because summer is here), will it decrease the strength of my heart because it isn't as intense as jogging?

Thanks for your help, as always it's greatly appreciated.

Jonathan

For some reason my profile doesnt have an option for inputting my age and doesn't recognize my sex, so I am 23 and 5'9 170lbs.

yes...give yourself weekly challenges...run 20 miles or 30...or whatever..and try to hit that target....switch up your training to incldue sprints....you can run same distance but try to run it faster....and then faster and then even faster....

swimming might be an awesome complementary activity to running because it's low impact and wil be easy on your knees/ankles/feet....biking might also be a nice change....
