Soreness is not 'important' per se...but it does reflect the intensity of your workouts...once you get into the flow of things the soreness usually decreases...
Assuming you're a beginner to lifting....many novice lifters tend to lift lighter than they should for the fear of injuring themselves or being afraid of the weights....it is possible that you're just not using enough weights....when a set prescribes for 10 reps for example and you do those reps yet you can really do 11,12,20,30....then you won't get much out of it....when a set calls for 10 reps....pick a weight that you can do ONLY 10 reps...some days you might only lift it 8 or 9 reps, that's fine....but to progress once the weight becomes easy, ie you can do it for mroe reps than is required, increase the weights by 2.5,5,10,20..etc depending on the exercise....
what is your typical workout like?
