Hey my name is Jackie I am currently a off and on excereciser and am planning on joining the armed forces. I need to get out there and get into shape for boot camp Im not sure what is the best way to go about this. Id like to do most of my workouts away from the gym as I need the outdoors to stay motivated. Any tips from any survivors of boot camp on the best way to prepare myself???? I want to go in knowing that I am prepared and can meet the fitnees requirements. I don't want to get whipped into shape once Im in!

When i wanted to join the military, i was disqualified for being overweight, so that was my motivation to get in shape. Ive been in for almost 5 years now, and am in the best shape of my life! What branch are you going into? Im a female who survived Air Force bootcamp, and the physical challenges werent really all that hard. Females had to run 2 miles in 20 minutes, and (i think) 38 situps in 2 minutes and 15 pushups in 2 minutes (or something like that). Before i left for bootcamp, i started jogging, and built it up and "practiced" my situps and pushups. Thats all the advice i could really give you. Just start now.

Run, run, run, run, run, run. That is the only thing that you really have to worry about. What branch are you trying to join? Sit ups, and push ups wont hurt either.-------------- I agree with everything that Asimmer says. |

Im wanting to finish of my nursing degree so I'd be joining the Canadian forces as as a nursing officer. Medical personnel can wear any uniform navy, airforce, military as long as there is a hospital on the base. I'd like to go into some specialty areas such as heli evacuation Im not sure to be honest if the fitness requirements are any strichter for the program, but thats in the future anyways. Im glad to hear from you Asimmer that I wont be needing to run up a mountain with a back pack full of rocks on!!!! I still just for personal fitness goals would like to get to the place one day where I could... But theres no rush!!

Hecdarec are you also in the military??? If so to both of you do you feel that it was a good caureer decision. Once I sign Im locked in for 5 years after I finish University. Its always good to hear feedback from people on there experiences. 5 years can be a long time if it feels like prison!!! I know ultimately I'll have to take that leap of faith.

Hey Spenco I am actually planning on taking advantage of getting the free education. It beats getting into more debt with student loans and I only have to serve five years to be free and clear post education. That really isn't a long time in the big picture and Im only 23 and free to take advantage of some really great opportunitys that the armed forces have to offer in the medical arena. I will do the ROTP during the summer breaks etc from school, or whenever it works out best possibly after I finish the degree. I don't think I really get the option, from what the recruitor said you go when they want you to go! Id like to be in pretty good shape before I go for training maybe not as hardcore as GI Jane, lol but close, any tips???? Where are you from I'm on the rock they call Vancouver Island!

Don't press the back button after you post.
Yeah the free education is nice isnt it? You say you are doing ROTP during the summer?? If you are doing ROTP you should be doing it during the year full time. You would have to do it at a civvie university b/c the RMC dosent have a nursing program. Just wondering...have you applied yet? You have probably seen this already but this is the link for the education plans and all that jazz from the CF Recruiting website: http://www.recruiting.forces.gc.ca/engraph/career/tradeinfo_e.aspx?id=57 BTW, I'm from Vancouver. |

I haven't applied yet. I have to get one more pre req chem 11 before I can get accepted into the bridge in course from LPN to RN. I'd like to do it either at UVIC or Malaspina so I can stay on the island while I'm in school. You have to be fully accepted before you can apply to the armed forces. To be quite truthful I am still trying to get over the fear of signing 9 years of my life into the services. Its hard to take the first step away from the comfort of my job and going into an environment where I'm sure I'll feel like a fish out of water for awhile. I'm almost positive I'll end up doing it because the idea of another student loan makes me cringe and the incredible opportunities available are pretty hard to pass up. I was referring to the boot camp and classes required for officers that I'd be doing on my down time from school. I'm sorry, how everything works is still very much a mystery to me. I'm just repeating what I recall the recrutitor stating. I may have it a little or a lot confused!!!! Anyways thanks allot for the web address, I'll be sure to check it out.
So tell me, why are you joining the armed forces?? What part of Van are you from? |

Jackie-joining the military is the best thing ive ever done with my life. i got in shape, i have an education, and a career. ive traveled the whole world at the governments expense and have met so many people, i have no doubt that youll love it. dont stress too much about the physical aspects of training. youll get better while your in bootcamp, and thats what they want, they want to see you improve while your there, so dont worry if your pushups arent perfect when you first go in. keep your head up, and good luck.

Thanks Lindsay I'm glad that you are having a fabulous time in the military. I hope that it turns out to be just as good an experience for me. I hope that your right about the push ups because right now Im feeling a little inadequate. I was really surprised to find out that I was so weak in that area of my body. So off to the gym I go to do my bench presses!!! Take care and good luck in your career.

============ Quoting from JackieRE: I haven't applied yet. I have to get one more pre req chem 11 before I can get accepted into the bridge in course from LPN to RN. I'd like to do it either at UVIC or Malaspina so I can stay on the island while I'm in school. You have to be fully accepted before you can apply to the armed forces. Civ U ROTP is very hard to get into, there are only a few spots available although this may be different for nursing applicants. To be quite truthful I am still trying to get over the fear of signing 9 years of my life into the services. Its hard to take the first step away from the comfort of my job and going into an environment where I'm sure I'll feel like a fish out of water for awhile. It's not really nine, its your schooling (four years) plus your commitment time after that which is 5 years. It's understandable why they do that, they don't want someone getting free education and disappearing after that to take some higher paying civvie job. If you want there are also several NCM positons for medical technicians if that appleals to you at all. All recruits feel like fish out of the water when they fiorst join, don't worry youll get used to it pretty quick. The free education is a huge plus, but you also get the oppertunity to serve your country while your at it. You won't be doing the courses on your down time, you will be doing them in the summer either before or after (im not sure) you start your schooling. Here is the link for the BOTC (Basic Officer Training Course) which you will be doing. http://www.cflrs.forces.gc.ca/english/officers/formation/index_e.asp I would advise you to drop by the CFRC (Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre) in Victoria which is located at 827 Fort St., Main Floor Victoria, BC V8W 1H6 Phone : (250) 363-3717 They know much more than I do and will be able to answer all your questions much better. Don't worry about pressure or anything like that they won't try to push you into anything. So tell me, why are you joining the armed forces?? What part of Van are you from? I want to serve my country, gain discipline, and be proud of my job, just to list a few reasons. I live near SFU in Burnaby. This website should be able to answer any further questions you will ever have about joining up: http://army.ca/forums/index.php/topic,21101.0.html Hope to see you in uniform some day. |

i am in the army and basic training isnt that difficult. I came in only being able to do 4 in 2 minutes correct pushups, 20 situps in 2 minutes, and i ran 2 miles in 19 minutes. I am a male and very skinny but i never did anything physical. i just now wanna start getting biggers. Without anything but army PT ive went from 120 to 135. I do 70 pushups in 2 min, 75 situps in 2 min, and run 2 miles in about 13:00 or less. Im hoping i can get built up to 165 in two years. Joining the military is a great idea tho, i just wanted to share some of my military experiences.
