why can't you go outside? I understand it's winder but just put on some mittens and get to work....the mittens will make gripping harder....strengthening your grip as well...

chin ups can be replaced with pull ups=with different grips, pull downs with variation of these with different handles on a cable station.........

you can buy bars that you put up in the doorway, they cost about £10-15, they do the job.

depends what you wanna work. If you do pull ups your working your biceps if you do chin ups your working your back and shoulders

I though it was vice versa, that pullups concentrated on back primarily, with chinups concentrating on back with biceps sharing the load. No?

With chinups you use an underhand grip (palms facing away from you), with pullups you use an overhand grip (palms facing towards you) With chinups your hands are closer than shoulder width apart, and with pullups your hands are shoulder width or further apart. They both help build the width of the back, but chinups slo uses the biceps more than pullups.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I pretty much have only free weights on a machine. I do have access to pully's. I could do chin ups but would rather do pull downs. I figure I'm doing the same thing from a different angle. Instead of pulling myself up I am pulling weight down. I can do close or wide grip which both work different parts of the back. That is my alternative to doing chin ups. What does everyone else think?

i think it wont be the same, you wont be using all the same muscles - you wont have to control the rest of your body, and the weight wont be the same, the mechanics are just different.
