Because of a lifetime of car wrecks and a little too much weight my lower back has always given me problems. Now, I have been using the Smith Machine for squats or doing hack squats of leg presses with a sled type machine. My question is should I try squats at the regular rack or keep going the way I have? If I try the regular rack, should I take any precautions? Thanks.

If you feel you are ready go for it. I strained my back erectors few years ago, and I stoped deadlifts all together, and did my squats in a smith too. TAke it slow, you balance and stablizers will be weak, from the lower back, and from the smith.
