Besides some legends of basketball, the most vertical i see is in high jumpers, long jumpers and volleyball players.
Could gator or any other volleyball strength coaches tell me how much leg strength these volleyball players possess as well as strength in general....thankx

gator on a similar note how closely is powerlifting squat correlated with vertical explosiveness(that people train with plyometric training?)

Puresurfr2, I'm no strength coach, but I know a little. I don't know exact strengths or numbers of many legendary jumpers as far as their squat max or anything, but I do know that not all jumpers are that strong in the legs. Jumping involves how fast you can perform the movement, power, and of course strength. However, I know many players personally that can't squat much but can jump out the gym, because they have such a high percentage of fast twitch muscle fibers. I can also think of some basketball players (Kobe Bryant, Ishmael Muhammad) that can squat 500+ pounds. So what I'm sayin I guess is that leg strength might not be the whole reason they can jump high, some people are just explosive or naturally gifted in a certain area.

Menace, if you're asking about the effects on your vertical comparing plyometrics and traditional weightlifting such as squats, the average results are pretty much the same. Olympic lifting is far more effective on average than either form of training. However, since jumping height involves SO many different factors, different forms of training affect people various ways depending on their weakness. For example, a strong squatter with no hops would be affected much more by plyos or olympic lifts than squats, because they already have strong legs, they just need to improve fast twitch muscles. Also, someone that has a high percentage of fast twitch fibers but is not very strong would be affected more by squats. It just depends on your weakness. That's why the best thing you can do is a training regimen that involves squatting, plyos, and olympic lifting in the same program. That way you're getting better at muscle contraction speed, strength, and power in the same program. I think Gator would approve of this post but if anyone has corrections feel free to call me out.

Yep..i totally agree with everything you said baller, i was curious to how much those guys can squat..it was more of a curiosity question, as for working out for vertical, i have spent a lifetime pursuing the holy grail of street basketball, which is namely vertical....at my peak i could get about 40" but there was not a large difference between my standing vertical and my running vertical ! i grew up playing with kevin johnson and hook mitchell and a few other playground legends, and i would need about another foot of vertical to keep up with those guys ! When KJ was a freshman at cal, he was only about 5'10 or 5'11 and w/o warming up, he just casually 2 hand reverse the ball with his elbows on the rim.....i seriously think he could dunk easier than i could touch the rim !

You grew up with hook mitchell and kevin johnson? So you must've known Gary Payton and Jason Kidd too? An Oakland guy. Man that's awesome, I've heard some serious stuff about Hook Mitchell like dunking from the three point line and jumping over cars and stuff. My vertical isn't all that great. Naturally, it was around a terrible 16", but it's now around 25 or 26 which still sucks but oh well.

I have 2 players over 300 lbs for a single in squat. 5 players around 265-285 lbs. 1 at 200 lbs. 1 at 180 (she is very tall and lanky).

Oh, and 7 of them jump well over 10' on an approach jump (which is like running 4 steps and trying to dunk). The two that can't touch 10' are 5'4" and 5"3.
