I am 18 years old. Back in high school, i was a competive distance runner. I was pretty good, 4:48 mile, and a 10:36 two mile. I lifted weights then too, but not the correct way. For weights all i would do was barbell bench press, lateral raises, and barbell curls, every other day, and that was my lifting program. I was a skinny kid. After high school, i started lifting the correct way, the bodybuildign way, and ive gained a noticeablel amout of muscle, ive gained aobut 10 pounds since then. People say that bulky muscles slow u down in distanec running, and when i go running now, i feel slower, and i get winded very easy, mauybe its just the cold air. who knows, but it sucks. But people say bulky muscle makes u sprint faster and when i went to sprint, i felt fast. I dont know, i want my speed back, but i am more interested in becoming a bodybuilder.

There are basically 2 different sorts of muscle fibres - fast twitch and slow twitch.
Fast twitch fibres are involved in sudden bursts of power like lifting weights or sprinting and are bulkier than slow twitch.
Slow twitch fibres are involved in endurance, like long distance running.
Your body adapts to training by altering the amount of these fibres, so if you spend a lot of time running, the slow twitch fibres will predominate, your endurance will be excellent, but your explosive power will be less.
If you spend more time lifting weights, your fast twitch fibres will predominate, and you will be good at sprinting.

Nows the time to descide......bodybuilder? or athlete?........i'm nto saying both are not athletes in their own way, just each two are way to different to try and be both.
Why would you not train your legs, if your a long distance runner? Thats the main thing you use to run, and is also your fondation for your body? Bigger you get the more your legs will have to work to get your body going. I mean how many 260lb sprinters you see?
