ive started assisting cross country lessons for 11-13 year olds as a way of introducing cardio into my routine, and when im running along shouting at people to keep running, they get stitchs (the cramp pain in your stomach). i was wondering, first what they are and the cause, and second, how to get rid of them. i just tell them to run it off, which is quite funny to see them try. :)

Not quite sure the reason stitches come on, whether it's a lack of water or something else, but anytime I've had one I've just ran it off. Maybe tell them to ease off a little but they'll be able to run through it.

Stitches are a cramp coming mostly from your organs, but mostly from your liver. If your not breathing right, when you place your right foot on the ground if your lungs are on the exhale your organs take a jolt. You have to synchronize this.
If it gets real bad have the person lay down on the floor with legs elevated and arms flat out. It should get releif.

To avoid stiches I usually make sure to drink pleanty of water before the run, not too much as I'm walking out the door so I'm not water-logged. I also try the breathing that carivan mentioned. Try inhaling when you step with the foot on the side that hurts. Good luck.
