Here's my question. I have almost 80lbs to lose, and I know that diet and exersize are key to weight loss. However, November through May, I don't have very much control over what I eat, as we are given a lot of our food. So the question is "With 80lbs to lose, will exersizing alone do anything in the way of weight loss, or will I only lose weight when the two of them are combined equally?"

What are some examples of what you will have to eat? You have to wok with what you have instead of just abandoning the diet.

That's my point, we are working with what we have but that isn't much at this point. Breakfast consists of some type of cereal(this morning it was cream of wheat)or eggs, lunch is usually a pb&j or tuna sandwich, carrots, and a protien shake(that will be gone soon) and dinner right now our options are frozen chicken pot pies, ramen noodles, chicken noodle soup, and french fries. That will for the most part be the norm, except when we eat at in law's houses. I have been on again off again with my working out, but saw some pictures over the weekend that has upped my resolve. I just wanted to know if exersize alone will show any results as I have sooo much weight to lose, even without being able to eat as well as I would like.

I dont want to get too personal, but cant you ask the person who is giving you your food to give you something a little more conducive (I have no idea if I spelled that correctly) to your dietary needs?

Not too personal at all. My mom and my in law's are the ones who give us food. My mom is on a limited income, and though not as bad as ours, she can't spend a ton of money on us. She does give us hamburger, chicken and steak when she can as well as veggies and boxed rice dishes ect. However, when that is gone, she can't buy more until she get's paid next, and then we rely on the in law's who give us popcorn, half used boxes of cookies, 6 eggs, and whatever else they "don't feel like eating" at the time. When I go grocery shopping I try to get veggies and meat, but it get's to where we have to buy what we can in bulk, that is very very cheap, and can keep for a long time.

I would think that maybe you could think "portions" if you don't have much for the choices of food. Try to focus on eating proportionately, not overeating. You would most likely have to keep track of the fat/carb/protein contents and see what you can do with what you have. But like Hec mentioned, if you ask them to keep the cookies, etc. away then maybe they will find some alternatives...maybe even for themselves! :) It is unfortunate that there are many healthy food choices out there but they are usually expensive...it is a rare, rare thing to turn on the tube to all those Hollywood glamour stars and find an overweight one - not that their aren't ANY but they are much few than if you go down to your local grocery store and look around. They can afford to eat good for you stuff. We just have to be a bit more inventive. Tuna is always good and is cheap along with the oatmeal, peanut butter, I eat rice cakes for treats rather than cookies from time to time. I think asimmer had some good ideas on this in the nutrition forum area. Good luck to you!
