I have been doing machine pulldowns up until now to put thickness and width on my lats, but I started reading today that pullups (wide-grip chinups) were much better compared to pulldowns. Why is that?
Any tips for performing chinups?

Another question I forgot to add in. If you want to put on muscle, same general rules apply for rep ranges? ~8-10? (Chinups I mean)

Pulldowns are an imititation of a pull up....pulldowns allow you to build yourself up to your body weight...or do more reps...if you can only do a couple with bodyweight

vary it up between them, they are both good exercises for wideining the upper lats. Don't forget close-grips to work your lower lats as well. Good luck

I think it is because of body posistion, look at the pull downs, you have to lean back a lil to do the pull down right, so you do get a good stretch of the lats, but more so at an angle.CAus eyou bring the bar to your chest.
Pull sups, your body is directly under the tower, thereby stretching upward, and not at an angle, more of the muscle to stretch, more muslce fibers you hitt.I really feel pull ups in my "arm pit" area of the lats more so that pull downs.
