when i do push ups, either regular or a moderate push up, i always end up with a muscle spasm in my left shoulder area. i then need to take a few days to let my shoulder feel better before i can continue with other exercises using these muscles. i believe my back muscles are fairly strong to support this exercise. i do pull ups and this does not create the same pain that the push ups do. my back aches and all i want is a massage to work out the kink. could it be my form?

Maybe you should try variation of the push up...like maybe at a slant against the wall...to warm up for the floor push ups...also make sure you get enough potassium/magnesium in your diet...lacking one of these minerals could give you muscle cramps/spasms...
To be sure you can ask someone to watch you do a push up to see if maybe you use one arm more than the other to push yourself up or maybe you position you arms unevenly...
