I want to shed about a stone of body weight and have read that weights will be a beneficial factor in helping me. However, won't i surely be adding more weight through increased muscle and still look the same shape and mould I am now with body fat.

Yes, you will probably gain weight through lifting weights. This is good weight though. Lean mass (that you get from lifting weights) not only burns 50 calories extra each day per pound that you have on you, but it looks very very good. If you gained 10 lbs of muscle, you would burn 500 calories more each day, and you would look great. You would look much different than you do now, even though you weigh more. Since you're putting on weight that is lean mass and not fatty tissue, your body fat % will go down. The muscle will also help to keep your metabolism going to inturn burn fat off. A healthy diet high in protein and other essential nutrients + weight lifting is a great way to look good and feel better about yourself.

Thanks, but I am not massive but have a little pouchy stomach. Does lean mass make you look thinner, such as narrowing the waist line and aid in taking inches of my mid section. or would it more be more appropriate to follow a high cardio programme with very low rep weights just to tone up sort of thing.

Would HIIT be beneficial to do during a mass cycle if you only plan to do 1-2 days of cardio?

Thankyou for that ducetothex.

Anyway, the other important points about HIIT are:

cardiovascular conditioning is improved with this, which is very important if you are only doing a minimum of cardio workouts.

The other point is that following a HIIT session, your metabolism is raised for hours afterwards - thus burning extra calories long after you've stepped off the treadmill - personally I find that a HIIT session doesn't burn any more calories than a steady pace session during the exercise, but I do feel smug watching the TV later on knowing I'm burning extra calories.
