Hey guys, I'm a freshman in high school and I'm on our school's soccer team. I'm a bench warmer for varsity and I start JV, but my coach tells me that if I was stronger and if I could use my left foot I would definitely start for varsity. Here's the problem: I'm a scrawny kid, about 5'4", and I only weigh 110 lbs. I also have absolutely no skill with the left side of my body. Can anybody give me any tips on developing my left foot and my strength?

Start eating (real food) and exercise. Emphasize your lower body. Squats, lunges, step machine, leg curls and hamstring curls. This will help with speed and flexibilty.

and since you say your a skinny guy, that means that your probably going to have to eat a lot...it might be hard for you at first (it is for me and I'm trying to get used to it)but once you keep doing it and continue to lift weights, yor apetite will grow greatly...Most people say that you need to eat 500 more calories then you burn in order to gain muscle mass...in your case, you'll probably need about 2,300 calories a day...However, like carivan said, it has to be real food. What he means by this is eat good clean foods. not just pizza's and such food like that...

As a soccer player I can tell you that if your team trains everyday you may find it tough to workout your legs real hard. But it's worth it to build your leg muscles up, even if you have to labor through a few practices. I would also recommend working out your upper body as well since at your level the game becomes a lot more physical, especially since guys will be looking to push around a guy of your stature. As far as your left foot goes, its mostly practicing, and has little to do with weights...when your screwing around before practice, concentrate on doing everything with your left foot. Take all your shots with your left (during warmups), and something that really helped me was going to that side during scrimmages in practice since it gives you confidence in a game situation. Thing that was hardest for me was learning how to slide tackle on my left side...i looked like a goof.

Soccer players are not even that big, so its not a matter of eating its a matter of practice, practice makes perfect right?

I think someome hit the ball on the head when they said train upper body as well as FOOTBALL can be physical as i can testify playing in East London! As for your left foot try kicking a ball against a wall using only youir left foot as this will give you better co#ordination and confidence then progrees your ball skills [trapping ,volley etc}.For leg excercises just keep it simple Lunges and Leg curls try to do these one leg at a time.Remember Footie is not just a hoofing game but a thinkig man's game.Good Luck
