Different types of cardio have different advantages -
Running is a good calorie burner, but is high impact - this is good for bone density, but makes you more likely to get injured.
Cycling is low impact, but doesn't burn as many calories.
Elliptical is low impact, is a good calorie burner, but you can't do it outdoors in the fresh air.
Swimming is low impact, excellent if returning from injury, but a low calorie burner.
Rowing is a good calorie burner, uses many different muscles, but not good if you have a bad back.
For the best results, and to minimise boredom, combine a variety of the above into your workout. The length of time depends on your goals. If you major goal is gaining mass then stick to about 20mins. You can do longer if you are wanting to lose lots of weight.
As for eating before, definitely do this. Near the end of the "cardio questions" thread there is a list of foods and how long it takes to digest them - use this as a guide of what to eat depending on how soon before you workout you can eat.
