You're tryin to tell me you want better abs right? If you want to get a six pack or a nice abs, you have to LOSE the fat first and then turn it into muscle.
You can never turn fat to muscle...
Goodluck.. crunches will probably help!

Fat cannot possibly be turned into muscle, just as muscle cannot be turned into fat. 2 distinctly different tissue types.

Abs are more about diet than anything. You must be lean to see your abs.

ok, i have a question related to this topic: we're told that we need to build muscle to burn fat. but at the same time we are told we need to lose wieght then build muscle for the abs. so is the ab area the only part of the body we need to lose wieght first then build? and then for the rest we build muscle to burn fat?

oh when i said "so is the ab area the only part of the body we need to lose wieght first then build?" i dont mean "spot losing" i mean, do we not do any crunches and such while losing wieght?

BB1 did not say you need to lose weight to build your abs nor did he say you need to lose weight to show your abs.

What he said was "You must be lean to see your abs."

The point of dieting to showcase your abs isn't about losing weight but about getting lean (these are 2 distinctly different things even though frequently occur simultaneously).

Keep on doing abdominal strengthening exercises for the sake of your overall strength and fitness. If you want to show off the results of that ab strength work - get lean, don't worry about losing weight - just get lean.

i wasnt talking specificly about what BB1 said. i'm refferring to questions i have asked on other post and read in other post concerning losing inches around the abs. and alot of the times i've read "lose wieght first then work on your abs". i dont care if i end up wieghing 200lbs, as long as my pant size are in the single digits.

thank you for your answer. i've seen different opinions on what works best on the ab area "eat right, lose wieght, then tone" vs "work the abs and lose wieght"

Sounds like you've got the right idea :). It really shouldn't be a build muscle vs. leaning out thing, but rather build muscle while leaning out. I'm glad to hear that your putting more stock in what a measuring tape tells you than what a weigh scale tells you.

Probably the best thing a person can do when trying to assess their progress in a fitness program is to throw their weigh scale in the dumpster.

i agree about tossing the scale, but sometimes seeing pounds fly is a motivator though. but you cant go by scale alone that's for sure. my hubby has this guy at work and i swear he's all muscle. well when they have p.t. tests they get wieghed to make sure they are with in the army requirements for max wieght and fat%. because this guy wieghs so much he gets taped everytime. and his inches are high, but it's all muscle.
