I’ve been so good for three weeks: I’ve eaten NOTHING I oughtn’t and I’ve worked out consistently: strength training 3 times a week no matter what, and doing cardio about 3 times a week as well (I know I should do more, but at least that ain’t bad). I’ve lost a whopping six and a half pounds. This makes me discouraged. Chances are, that’s just water weight. I’m not going to stop, but I might be doing something wrong. My calorie intake has often been under 1500, but I’m trying to keep it around 1700 (not that I know what’s proper – the nutritional tracker tells me about 2,400 and that seems too high, even after doing a fitbuddy search on what people though.

I’m frustrated. I may be gaining muscle, but it’s hard to tell. Scales are just so nice and FINAL. I can practically lose six and a half pounds by peeing, or taking off my shoes.

Don't get too worried- you are doing well. You're averaging about 2 pounds per week which is right on track from what I've read and been told. Most people are thrilled with losing 6.5 pounds in that amount of time. Just think- after 3 months you'll have lost over 25 pounds. It takes time to gain weight, and it takes time to lose weight. You don't want to over-do it with your training- that can have negative affects on your body. Just keep working on it and don't get discouraged.

I would suggest tossing the scale and sticking to measurements. It takes 3500 calories to lose or gain a pound of fat, so if you do the math, with exercise and a lowered calorie amount, that can be a loss of 1-2 pounds a week. I think you are doing wonderful! Take out a measuring tape, go to www.mybodycomp.com and keep a journal there and you will be much happier with the results, I'll bet. I lost 20.5 inches but only 8 pounds, of that though I lost 15 pounds of FAT and gaine 7 pounds of lean muscle, which I would take any day!!

Keep your chin up and be happy with your loss, the scale is NOT your friend when trying to begin a weight loss program and I would venture to guess is actually encourages people to QUIT! Weigh in if you have to only once a month! Measure every two weeks. You also must align the calories you NEED for energy and eat that much or you won't lose what you want, rather you may lose that muscle you are working hard for! mybodycomp also gives you an idea what you will need more acurately based upon those measurements.

Good luck to you and be happy you are doing your body good by working out and eating better!

Thanks, guys. Great encouragement and advice. Any idea how I can be sure how many calories are optimal? I want to get this right for once!
