I'm new to the ft and would like some advice. I am working out quite a bit and still not losing too much weight. It is hard for me to combine diet AND exercise. If I'm dieting, I concentrate on how I eat and don't exercise but 2-3 times a week. I lose a little weight and then stop dieting. Now I am exercising like crazy up to 6 times a week with cardio in the morning and strength training at least 3 times a week. I haven't really been wat:(ching what I eat. I'm losing weight, but not alot. I've been exercising steadily for 4 months and have lost about 15 lbs. Am I just being impatient? :(

15lbs in 4 weeks isn't bad at all. Remember that you're probably putting on muscle because of the weight training. And muscle weighs more than fat and so there may not be as big of a change in your overall weight as you might think. You might want to guage progress by inches instead. How do your clothes fit now compared to 4 months ago?
I have a hard time too with giving diet and exercise attention at the same time. Maybe keep up with the workout and change 1-2 things about your diet each week. Don't try and do it all at once. Keep working out and ease into dietary changes. Now - if only I could take my own advise. Good luck and congrats on your progress so far. |

I agree, I think 15 pounds is great as we normally lose about 1-2 pounds a week and due to the gain of muscle as prairiegirl mentioned, you may have lost more body fat - for instance, I lost 15 pounds of fat, but gained 7 pounds of muscle - the scale only reads that I lost 8 pounds, but the inches lost tell a different story!
I am not sure what you mean by "dieting", how many calories are you eating in a day? I am wary when people mention dieting as I fear they are not eating their required calories and that can put you in a standstill. Or do you mean you are adjusting your diet to the good stuff? You may want to try eating 4-6 meals a day, that has helped me a lot and I've found when I don't do it, those are days I eat too much as I'm so hungry. The changes to your diet don't have to be horrid ones, I've added oatmeal rather than cereal in the morning, have chicken for another meal, fish another, eat cottage cheese if you like it, fruits, etc. Change oils from hydro to olive oils, etc., replace white bread and pasta's with wheat...I found by making sure my 'fridge is stocked with things I like, even though they are different from the junk I used to eat, it is much easier to deal with my new eating habits. -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Thank you all so much for your advice. I guess I'm just being impatient. I had been doing really well by dropping all fast food, drinking lots and lots of water only, reducing carbs. I cook a lot more of my meals and bring in snacks to work. I think my mind is set that carbs are BAD even good ones like fruits and some of the veggies. I've done ATKINS before and lost weight but I stop after induction and gain it right back. I know I'm weird. I just can't stick to it. Exercise is working but it doesn't show me results as fast as Atkins. When I sit down at a restaurant, I chose something I shouldn't instead of just a salad and that is my problem right now. Especially when I'm with my family. I'm hispanic and love tacos and tortillas. When I see them, I can't resist. That is how I grew up to eat everything! This is why I'm been overweight all my life.:) Well, thanks again for your support. :)

I have to agree with you swtsu3685, restaurants are my worst, so I have avoided them *pout*...I really like the great sandwiches, steaks, baked potatoes and ohhhhh..you know! I eat low carb tortillas pan fried in just a tiny drip of olive oil, then top with refried beans and just a tiny bit of cheese, then I top off with veggies on thick when I want something tacoey, it's not the same, but it is good and it fills me up and the kids love them, too!-------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. That sounds pretty good Veda!! I love mexican food. However, after painting myself in a pair of capris earlier to go buy our dog a new collar for his chain, I've decided that I'm not going to choose those convenient foods anymore.
swtsu3685, I can relate to you as well because the minute I begin seeing results, liking what I see, I lose the motivation. When in all reality, I should get MORE motivation. I tell you my thinking is set up backwards. It's beginning to change though!! By the way, does your screen name stand for southwest texas state university? I grew up in TX from 4th grade until the end of my junior year. Then, my family and I moved back to KY. I wanted to attend SWTSU had we stayed there. Anyway, your letters just reminded me of that college. :) |

make your own torillas with whole wheat flour, flax etc. We do at home and absolutely love love love them. and we know what we're eating. I found the recipe at www.epicurious.com MMMMM
I have a hard time at restaurants too. Maybe using restaurants as a reward would be a good idea. OR - instead of going out for supper, go out for coffee and dessert as a reward. Eat health and save a few calories for a piece of pie or something once in a while. The reality is, none of us will NEVER eat another dessert or another piece of pizza. We just need to focus on when we get them. What does everyone else do when they get home from work and can't stand the idea of cooking and neither can your spouse. We usually have problems on wednesdays. Any suggestions to help me avoid calling the delivery guy. |

Yes phimugirl1, I graduated from Southwest Texas State University, it's now Texas State University. :) I live in Austin, Texas now and currently work for them now.
Why is it that we get like that, lose a little and stop being motivated? I am sticking with it, but my nutrition is still not good. I'll have to research some ideas. Good idea prairiegirl, I just need to get the will power to not get out of control with desserts. I'm a chocolate freak, and once it touches the lips...well, I can't just have one bite. |
