hi deadheadtd, I would suggest 48 hrs rest in between workouts of the same muscle group... try dividing the muscle groups into 2 or 3 days...

as for me, this is my 3 day split

day 1 - chest and shoulders
day 2 - back, bis & tris
day 3 - legs

hope this helps

What's a good amount of time to wait inbetween lifting? I've heard as much as giving different muscle groups an entire week off, or as little as one day's rest (48 hours inbetween working the muscle or muscles.)

I'm sure this has been asked before, but danged if I can find it.

Right now I'm leaning towards doing multiple muscle-group exercises (deadlift, squat, benchpress, etc.) twice a week, and isolation exercises (chest fly, curls, etc.) three or four times a week.

your asking really 2 different things.......
my body parts are split into the following..
chest, bis
back tris
legs
shoulders
I do each one of those once a week. I do shoulders on sundays, i don't do them again till the next sunday.

Inbetween actually lifting i say go 2 days on one day off
monlift
tue lift
wed rest
thurs lift
fri lift
satoff
sun off

Mne is a lil more complex lol
sun shoulders
mon back
tues cardio( cavles forearms maybe)
wed chest, biceps
thurs cardio( calves forearms)
fri legs tris
sat off completly
I do abbs just about ever day one excercise except on leg and back day.....those 2 days i do squats and deads and they get worked nicly then.

I like to switch it up. I'm all for reading other peoples routines and seeing what I can do to mine. You gotta do what works for you. But I also recommend not doing the same thing over and over, week in and week out.
