Any advise from any of you on the subject of having no spotter? While lifting, I don't feel that I can give it my all because I cannot lift as heavy as I'd like.

Tell people where your from on this site to see if anyof us are neat you. Then talk to people at the gym, see if they will spot you. or see if there is someone there that you can start to always go with (partner). (isnt your son lifting too? lift together) -snow

I know how it feels. When I start to get intense I'll swtich to a machine; this way I can let go and the bar won't crush my sternum if I can't bare the weight. If a machine isn't available for the exercise then I just use free weights and I can drop them any time. But hey, if you can get a spotter that's good to. I just personally adopted the view that if I can't lift it by myself then I'll ruin my form if I RELY on a spotter, which many have a tendency to do.

I have a home gym (still working on it). My son's schedule and mine just do not mix at all...He's a teen...busy-busy-busy and he is leaving for the rest of the summer. I am in Arizona and it is waaaaaaaaay to hot to work out after a certain time of the day. A partner would be nice, but I have no friends. I know it sounds sad but its true.I live and work out of my home.

One thing to do is to use machines with self spotters. The only other thing that I can think of is just learning your limit and where you can go past your limit. It works for me and I think it comes with time. Best of luck

I like to push limits though, that is my problem, but not at the cost of injury.

I remember as a kid I couldn't even imagine myself bench pressing or squating because it seemed so risky and it still feels this way especially with a lot of weight. I don't know about the others, but with high poundages I need a spotter especially for exercises like the 2 just mentioned. A reliable spotter would help you get the form right as well as get that last rep up there. Try using smith machines if they are available. With all the cables attached to it, it could make the exercise easier and safer to perform.

I have this problem at the gym also. I go very early in the morning and don't see alot of people standing around to ask. Most of us are serious, time pressed, and what not. I have found ways around this. If I go real heavy I will do my decline bench for example at the squat rack and make the necessary adjustments to the safty bar to catch the weight without crushing my neck. It takes some time to set up properly but I believe in pushing til you can't push no more. Just not at the cost of my neck!
