Ok, I've just been reading a post in another part of the community about cardio - good or bad. Everything I've learned about weightloss suggests that to lose weight you need to do at least an hour, 3-5 times a week of cadio. The comments I've read make a lot of sense, weight training, diet and cardio all have a place. However, it's suggested that weight training or resistance training is more beneficial. Obviously it builds muscle which burns calories even when you are doing nothing, but... how does that fit in for someone like me who has about 100lb to lose?

Do I concentrate more on the resistance training and just do half hour sessions of cardio? I've never tried that to be totally honest! I've failed so many times in the past to lose this weight, perhaps this is what I need to be doing. I'd love some sort of input, as well as a couple of suggestions about how to deal with portion control, what is right and wrong. I was thinking I had a handle on all this, but I've discovered Im in the dark, big time!

While cardio has its place, doing to much of it may not be the best thing to do. Losing 100lbs is a long term goal, one that I am greatly aware of. That said my greatest gains in fitnes came when i added 20 mins of mod-heavy cardio 3-4 times a week and a hour of weight training 5 times a week(I did this cause that was when I had the time I did one body part a day 5 days a week). But the real key to losing fat (which is somethng these fitness gurus fail to mention, you want to lose fat and gain lean muscle. to do that you need to weight train. Fat takes 2-3 times the space of muscle, therefore when you lose fat and gain muscle you actually may gain weight but lose size) is diet. ALl the cardio and weight training is not going to o anything if your diet is not good. This fitness thing is funny we all can give you adivce, lots of it is very good and tried and tested. But in the end it is what works for us, so my advice is to try lowering the cardio and up the weight training, but make sure your diet is good....hope this helps.

DeeTee, I did not need to loose a 100 lbs but about two years ago I was very very close to having a six pack for the first time ever. I did three to four days of moderate to heavy lifting with no cardio and like everyone will tell you I watched what I ate.

What they said. Give the weight training a try. You and I have about the same amount to lose by the looks of it. I always make sure to get the weights in during the week, even if that means I get less cardio. If it's a time thing, you might want to search out HIIT on this site and try that for the cardio. It's about 20 minutes or so and is a great workout.

PS - I noticed in your profile that you would like to work your way up to a marathon. I'm doing a walk-run program right now. I haven't thought about a marathon, but would like to do a 10K next spring. I'd love for us to share our progress!

On a side note, I have a workout video that incorperates resistance bands into for "weight" training and it works really well for me since I don't really like to go to the gym much! I started with about 90 pounds to lose give or take and while my weight has only dipped down about 25 pounds I've gone from a size 20 to 16. My point is . . . not all of us need to hit the gym for an hour 5 days a week and do massive amounts of weight lifting to get the results that we are looking for, it's a matter of trial and error to see what ratio of cadio/weights you need to accomplish your goals! We are all different and so are our workouts! However I agree with them on the diet thing, that is the same pretty much for all, certain foods are healthy and others aren't, find the healthy ones you like and get creative with them! Hope this helps, I know I ramble

Thanks everyone,
My diet is something I have to work on, on a day to day basis. Im not even half as disclipined as I would like to be! I would probably get it right 5 out of 7 days though, as long as Im working out as well. I feel like Im ripping myself off if I eat crud and exercise, what's the point!

Prairie girl, I've just recently signed up on the cool runnings site. Im doing the couch to 5k in 30 days at the moment, it's taking a little longer than the 30 days though, Im trying it in the rain.. with a cold.. I guess I never said I was clever. LOL I would love to swap info and progress, though I think you might be a bit further on than me.
