Ok your about to start working out seriously and now you have set aside money for supplements......this is asked often so lets get it out and in the open.
**What should A person buy? And how do I know if its any good? And am I getting a good deal? Befroe you jump on the band wagon with the latest fad shake, or the ones that " scientifccly tested" results, that they artvertise in their own ad....few things you need to look for! 1st is protein of coarse......You want as much protein PER SCOOP. That it comes with. THis means your looking for serving size..... On the back of Optinium 100% whey protein it says... A serving size is 28.4 with 22-23g of protein.....and its in a 5lb container and has about78 servings in it. And its about 40bucks, so you say thats a good chunbk of change lets g o look somemore.Always look and browse, protin shake mixs can only be sold for 6months even though they don't expire for like 3 years, somtimes you can find cheep deals cause they go clearance they are usually half off. And never listen to the sells reps, they work on commesion and will seel you anything! Longe Range Whey by MET-Rx it s "known brand" so it has to be good right? well on the back it says 29 grams of protein( hmm better than the other brand) but what! a serving size is 43 grams and theres only 53 servings in a 5 lb jug? And its the same price hmmm.....more than likly it takes 2 scoops to equal one serving of this brand....while the other 2 scoops will give you over 40grams of protein. I'm a college student so money can get tight, I want my moneys worth I know you guys do too. Alot for it depends on taste and weither you like it or not. And unfortunally you can't taste the mix befor eyou buy it lol, so thats trail and error. I do suggest if you buy in bulk like I do , change flavors up, keeps you from getting burnt out! On the back of any container it has also listed carbs, fats, proteins and other crap too. Look and see what works best for you, cause if your trying to loose weight, then you may want a lower carb one, be careful with weight gainers, most of the times it has lots of carbs and fats but not awhole lotta protein and a few scoops of that is like 500 or so calories. Whatever your gaol is look at the label don't get on a band wagon. Next you have your protein now what? Well i'd suggest a multi vitamen.......Muscles need all kinds vitamens, they help your body stay healthy and can prevent dieases later in life. You don't have to spend alot of money......i Know wal mart you can get a 300 tablet container for liek 5 bucks, an dyou only have to take one a day. But again watch the serving sizes.....may have to take 3 or 4 a day to gett all 1005 of what you need. Creatine which is iffy and some may say , just cause i talk abotu it here don't mean all the teens on here need to go buy it, you need to read up on it 1st before you ever take anything besides a protein or multi. *** here is what creatin is and does......THis amino acid deriative particapates in engery production in the cells. Over 90% of the creatine is found ( in humans) in the muslce, much of which is conventrated in the form of creatine phosphate. Its concentration is especially high when large amountsof chemical engery is converted to mechinical engery. Creatine phos. serves as a store of engery in muscle, and it provides a reserve of high engery phosphates that can be rapidly mobilized to maintain the intercellular level of ATP.( main source of engery of all cells) So this is like putting a high ocatane fuel in yoru car, its the same engine, just better performance and better gas milage. Its nto magical, it does not build muscle, but rather give you the extra engery ( fuel) to build muscle. Ex. on bench press day you can bench 225 for 5 reps and your dead after that, then maybe after you take creatine for a week or so, the next time you get 225 6 oralmost 7 times. Its giving you the abilty to rep more reps( more engery production) its just up to you to still work out, and get that one last rep! the final supplement, and too me the very important one.....its cheap and free! what is it? WATER especially if your taking creatine you need lots of water a gallon or lil more a day, everything in th ebody uses water for everything. Blood is made from it.....hell or whole body is like 70% water...drink it and drink it often! Good luck everyone, and I hope you read this, understadn it and now know more than the guy at the gnc is trying to "tell " you...........good luck and happy lifting! :dumbbell::dumbbell::dumbbell: -------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

Got a question Big Andrew,
At Netrition.com, when you display the complete list of protein powders, (it takes a few seconds for my slow ass computer) about... oh... 3/4 of the way down there are 4 Prolab brand pure whey protein shake mixes (5lbs each). The chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry are all $25.99. But the orange vanilla swirl is only $19.99. Any thoughts on why this is? They all have like 72 servings at 22 g of protein each. I was about to jump on the orange vanilla swirl, as it seems to good to be true. Then I thought maybe it tastes like @*!%, and that's why it's cheaper becuase it doesn't sell that well. But I'm sure that I could get used to it. For 19.99 it can't be that bad. What do you think man? |

They usually sell stuff like that cheaper cause its not as possible....tastes bad, or people just don't
buy it...........the place I buy mine from( a store) they sell mint lime green protein shakes......Its like 19.99.........just doesn't settle well taste wise to me lol . Just reameber if you buy it and don't liek it, you have 5lbs of nasty protein to drink lol -------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

That's true. I have heard that strawberry is some of the funkiest stuff to buy. I usually stick to the choc. or vanilla. When I bought ON Whey it was because this site recommended it, and I went to the store and compared it with like 4 different brands and it held it's own, if not surpassed the others, so I bought it. I have been very happy with it. I tried Celltech creatine, and was quite upset because somehow I overlooked the sugar content. Grrrrr...but I am out of it now, and I'm not sure if I should go back to it or not. If anyone has any suggestions as to a good brand of creatine, let me know...I know this isn't a supplement forum, but I was on the topic. -------------- Spark the fire that will torch the numbness inside. Do the math when looking for protein counts.
See what the percentage of protein to one scoop size is. Anything below 75% protein per scoop is not worthy because you are paying for fillers. A good quantity would be around 30 grams of protein in one 35 gram scoop. -------------- "A will finds a way, failure is not an option" Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

Gotta pretty much agree with your list, I take all of the above but also supplement glutamine as well for recovery. If you hit the weights hard, you need it.

Glutamine to me is a waste, i have taking it and i saw no improvments, if i was sore i was sore, if i wasn't i wasn't, i perfere spending my money on pills or capsules that contain more than one amino acid. Glutamine, is not essential, if you get alot of aminos your body can make what it needs.
cozzy I have never herd of those supplements, like I said......good whey protin and a creatine and good diet is pretty much all you need and water. -------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

Really? Hmm well guess its just one of those things then. Glutamine seems to really help speed my recovery time after a workout but to each his own.
