I've read many messages about working out each muscle group once a week, so they have time to repair and not to overtrain the muscle group. But, on the ft exercise program, they have abs being worked out 3 times a week for me.. are the abs excluded from the same overtraining issues as the other muscle groups?

In my opinion, and it may not be right, but as long as your not doing 300 crunches everyday starting out, I wouldn't worry about it. I work my abs 3/days a week and have been doing so for a while, just remember to take a break every 8-12 weeks. I circuit train on my abs so I do 3 circuits, 6 exercises, 15 reps each exercise. Never had a problem from overtraining, hope this helps. Later.

Abs and legs are used in daily activity more than the other body parts. They are able to recover quicker.

Work them NO MORE than 3 times per week, and only 2 if trying to gain mass there. (build a six pack)
