I want to get back into running (looking at competing again, hopefully in the near future), but am curious as to how this will effect my gains in weight lifting. Is it possible to keep up a regular lifting routine and still run on a consistent basis? If so, how much will I have to compromise one to accomplish the other?

I know just from an eating standpoint, my diet will have to probably change. I'll have to eat a lot more carbs to keep up my daily energy for running, but at the same time, I'll still need the protine to keep from canabalizing my muscle growth. Is it realistic to try to do both, or will it just become counterproductive? What is the best way to go about doing this, does anyone have any advise here?

Alternate running days and lifting days. Watch that your legs get some recovery time. You don't need as many additional carbs as you think.
Unless you start dropping bodyweight rapidly, keep your calories the same. Then adjust them as needed.

What are your goals with relation to lifting?

My goals right now for lifting are to really get defined and eventually start getting cut. I'm not looking to get into any kind of competition form, but I do want loose some body fat (down to 15-18%). I'd also like to build up enough upper body strength to do 10 chin-ups unassisted!! That's always been something I felt I should be able to do, but never could. (I can't even do 1 right now!!) I like to be able to about 35% stronger than where I'm at right now (in reference to how much I can lift).

So is it not a good idea to lift and run on the same day, even if I'm only doing a short upper body set? I often feel like I'm not doing enough when I only do one thing or the other.

You could do upper body and then run.
