Hi everyone. My experience with the Atkins diet has been an overwhelmingly good one. Three of my doctors insisted I resume (my primary family medical doctor, my pulmonary specialist, and my neurologist). I only went back to my poor eating habits because of another disability and could not do the shopping myself, and all that learning was too much for my husband to carry at the time. Just by default, having what I had for dinner, my husband lost 20 lbs. with no effort whatsoever. I lost 48 with the diet and exercise. I was on the diet 4.5 months.
Just FYI, Atkins is not about eating protein or NOT eating carbs, OR counting calories. There is the initial phase of the diet called the Induction Phase; everyone mistakes this as the lifestyle, and it is not. Every single possible cause for failure (as I see posted above) is addressed. It is sad to see that Atkins has been mistaken to be a high protein and low carb lifestyle. If folks would read the book from cover to cover, ever single issue is addressed to prevent failure. The only time the diet is higher in protein is in the initial induction phase; during that phase, the select foods will change the metabolism into fat burning instead of sugar/glucose burning. Most of it is actually raw veggies. And after that, foods are reintroduced ... yes, carbs. Basically ... it's only about food selection. Not eating processed foods, foods containing nitrates, eating healthy carbs instead of unhealthy, etc. It is not at all about fat consumption, protein-orientation, no-carb orientation, counting calories, or any of the other balarky I see mentioned. Also, the South Beach Diet is almost the same, with the exception being grains during the induction phase. According to my extensive personal studies and those of these three specialists, Atkins will remain the perfect diet for me! My only regret was that I lacked the strength after those 4.5 months of total success to continue the healthy lifestyle that I "almost" had secured; purely circumstancial! My case is in the book too. My blood pressure went down, my blood sugar was stabilized, my healthy cholesterol went up and the unhealthy went down, I lost 48 lbs., I had energy and my mind was alert .... I can't say enough good about the Atkins Diet. Being so into it ... if folks actually read the book, most of what we see now as far as healthy eating (though not presented as Atkins), is, in fact, what Atkins teaches. Saved my life! Oh, and Dr. Atkins fell down the steps and suffered brain trauma as a result ... purely due to the fall. He was in optimal good health otherwise! Believe me ... I looked into it. Thanks for letting me share. -------------- ~ Apneac |

And several foods mentioned above which are claiming to be "Atkins-approved" foods are not at all! Pork rinds?? I know ... NOT. No unsaturated fats, no hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, no nitrates, no sugar, no trans fats. On oils, ONLY expeller or cold pressed. See the glycemic indexes, as well. It also addresses sweeteners and the dangers of those ... only sucralose is allowed (marketed at Splenda). Other than that "ose" suffixes need to be avoided. Loading up on meat?? NO! A salad and veggies with every meal, perhaps to start.
And about all those "hidden" sugars; that's the main reason people fail. Read those labels. I'm done on my soapbox now. LOL  -------------- ~ Apneac |

I wish I could have been so lucky, I had to exercise just the same. And the diet highly recommends it. People may "initially" see significant weight loss without exercise but they (most) will eventually plateau (at least those that I know that have succeeded on it long term). I didn't lose much until I exercised ... and then VA-VA-VOOM!! LOL-------------- ~ Apneac |

I think a lot of the general dislike of the Atkins diet from many comes from the uneducated that don't even read the book. I know countless people who say their going on the Atkins diet... they don't read the book, in their minds it's simply, "Carbs=bad". These people avoid carbs indiscriminantly.
I mean any time somone is looking for a healthy snack and pick some ground beef over an apple something is up. I haven't read the book myself but I get the general feeling that Atkins must be a little more complicated than "All carbs=bad". It's these uneducated irrational desperate individuals that simply won't take the time to actaully read up on their new "life long habits" |

I agree. There is no way I could do this diet properly without the book (and without reading it cover to cover). It stays with me all the time, you should see all the paperclips and stickie notes I have in the pages to quickly go to what I need. Unfortunately, healthy eating does require study and learning ... at least in my case ... and those food labels! In short, Atkins = carbs good! Eat the good carbs, the healthy ones that will give your body the most benefit. As for protein, a lot of foods besides red meat & fish contain proteins. I have the book right beside me on the desk right now. I am getting ready to begin but want to be "well studied."
I can't help but watch this thread to "quote" excerpts from the book when I see more false claims based on (?) heresay. Questions? I tried all kinds of diets. Failed on every one. I can't restrict myself and feel hungry, I can't count calories, I can't diagnose and dissect every morsel that goes into my mouth, I can't measure my portions; maybe some can, but I'm not one of them -- to tedious, I'll just give up. There is so much healthy (and yummy) food I can eat, I could not possibly try it all! Once I realized that, it's what set me free. I'm going to learn all about it step-by-step, this one time ... and just live and eat right (I have most of it down from before). More and more goodies are constantly popping up too. -------------- ~ Apneac |

Atkins diet is almost good. The problem is there are alot of artificial sweetners in it. I read the about 1/3 of people don't respond well to it.
I found a book called The Metabolic Typing Diet. It helps you determine what percentage of carbs, fat and protien YOU should be eating. There are 3 types - Protien, Carbs and Mixed types. I'm a protien type which is close to the Atkins diet without the artificial crap. Check it out, it makes alot of sense. |

On the Atkins diet, the best (of only two) recommended artificial sweeteners is sucralose (marketed as Splenda). The other one is saccharin, but it's a personal preference and best avoided. Splenda is all-natural and is from the actual sugar cane ... but has no impact on blood sugar. Atkins is against artificial sweeteners ... especially those with aspartame. "All natural" is the way to go ... all the way around on Atkins. That is what the diet promotes.-------------- ~ Apneac When I die, I want to go peacefully like my grandfather did, in his sleep ... not screaming like the passengers in his car. |

If you do the diet or way of life as he wrote in the book you will add carbs back to your diet. It is funny when people say that it is a carb restricted diet. Yes he tries to steer you away from Simple carbs and gets you to eat more complex carbs. I did it and lost a lot of weight and I still follow it. He tries to teach you about your body and what it can take. All the books are now saying stay away from potatoes and refine carbs. That was his doing. If you start to add carbs back and you start to get fat then lay off that food. Simple right. Do not eat what gets you fat. I think this way of life should be a weight lifters dream you can eat the calories “witch you can not on a calorie restricted diet" you can eat all the Protein you want and you can eat all the complex carbs you want as long as you do not get FAT.

i thought that carbs turned in to fat! i tried this diet a little way back where you could eat under 12gm of carb every day and 35 clories from fat. it was hard to find anything to eat like that. except brocolli.

Well I have researched healthy eating and exercise extensively. At my best I was 5'8 and 130lbs--size 4--worked out 6days a week. I gained 30lbs due to unhealthy eating and less activity. Now I want to lose weight--my primary goal---and then rebuild the muscle I lost AFTER I get to my goal weight. I know about Atkins and after just cutting back my carbs for a week lost 4lbs. My question is:
If I start Atkins--and continue working out with the intensity I do now---adding HIIT--will I loss that much muscle? I sit for at least 10hrs a day at work---so I have mad energy to spend at gym. Also when I am at my goal weight--can I slowely add more carbs less fat to equate to a healthy diet as prescribed on this website without gaining any weight (I'll do it real slow if that's what it takes) Or am I stuck at eating 70-150carbs till I die? Last question---the ideal carb intake in the first two weeks is 25IMPACTcarbs... and you can eat as much fat/processed low carb food as u like, as long as I stay close to my calorie goal prescribed at 2,500. True? Yes, I am getting the Atkins book... Would it just be better to eat a balanced portion and exercise---I'll have cut my calories way back though to lose the same amount of weight I want to lose doing Atkins. Remember first goal lose weight---from their maintain and build muscle, I know you can't do both at the same time. P.S. anyone know of a good free Atkin meal plan website. Perhaps a 7-14 eating guide--- |
