Is there a clear cut advantage to doing squats versus leg presses?

Yes...squats employ more support muscle use than presses.

squats are better for the fact thats gravity is resisting more, let me explan........a leg press is on a track, or a pivot usually, you pres at a angle not up and down like in squats, gravity is at work but not so much so. I mean think about it if you can't squatt 300 lbs, but can leg press 600 theres a differance weight wise and control wise. The machine controls the weight for you, so all you have to worry about is pressing it back and forth, squats you have to ballance, keep abbs and back tight, go just low enough but not to low and come up conrolled. Big differance!

depends, the negative on squats is very good, however if not done proper;u you can get hurt very bad doing that with squats, leg presses how ever if you put your feet really high on the plate and focase on the negative on that its much safer.................still leged deadlifts, deadlifts, good mornings, sumo squats/ sumo deads are all good for the hams.
