Ack. I just have this feeling I'm gonna get berated for this: Well, here goes: Is constant practice the only way to increase push up reps? I am a weakling and going to the Airforce soon. I have managed to do 18 pushups (bad form) as a max for me. I have a little over 2 months to be able to do 40 within 2 minutes. I need a little guidance. I have a few weights and a gym at my disposal. So can anyone tell me what excerises to do in order to increase this number? I am really in a fix here so any advice would be gladly appreciated.

Practice makes perfect. Where do you think your problem area is? Arms or chest. That will determine where you need to concentrate your efforts. Try varying your hand width. Work triceps by adding some dips. Stick with it. You will get there. Trust me.

A simple knapsack with some weights will help if you wear it each night while doing pushups. In the gym, chest exercises are good but a couple of nights won't help.

Yeah just keep doing it dude everyday and write down your max! aim to beat it...
Some days, like the others said do something other than pushups to strenthen those muscles
If you do excercises with resistance for ahwile doing pushups with just your body wieght will be a sinch...
I used to be able to only do about 18 or so... chest touching the ground then all the way up locked elbows.. now i can do about 50 perfect form after about 5 months

Thanks for the advice guys. The knapsack idea is really interesting, I think I'm gonna try that tonight. Hey Agamble - What exactly are dips? I know my chest is a problem area, more-so than my arms anyway. I would like to do butterflys but have no bench at home, any do-it-yourself suggestions? Thanks again.

dips back up to a chair, sit down and catch your body stiff armed. let your arms bend at the elbow and lower your but to the floor keeping your elbows pointed behind you. Push back up. ..1 count done.

You can simulate a butterfly on a slick wood floor. Get two towels and assume push up position. Stiff armed slowly spread your hands apart by letting your hands slide the towels. Spread as wide with your arms as you can and then slide them back up. Imagine doing sliding splits with your hands...like that.May be a little hard at first but keep with it. Hope that helps

Hi, another thing you could try, when you get to your 18(Max) full pushups. Give yourself a 60sec break, then do another 20, but this time with your knees on the ground, push ups with knees on the ground are a bit easier, but after you have already done your full 18 will still be quite hard, then maybe the next day or so, you can do 19 full Pushups followed by the 20 Knee push ups again, same thing next day add an extra full pushup(20) then do your 20 knee push ups keep doing this, and in 2 - 3 weeks you will have added an extra 20 full push-ups, thats 40 full push-ups at that rate, and still a month or more to go for you to perfect the 40 in 2mins.
