About six weeks ago, I decided to get off my arse and whip my body into shape...I am 6'0 and 182 pounds...my goal is to use the body mass I already have and get it cut up.....but at the same time, I would like to gain a little bit more mass....my vision for me is a swimmer's body but a little beefier....the thing is I don't have the cash to join up with a gym, so the way I "weight train" is by pushups.....I do regular pushups, elevated diamond pushups, weighted pushups, pullups, and i'm following the 12 week ab program. I even do the bicep curls with a regular can...and I actually feel the burn when i do it properly:)
My question is....even with taking in as much protein as possibe, will I be able to gain muscle mass by doing just pushups and pullups? I've gone on various websites and the opinion is split on whether doing intense pushups will really work your upper body and gain muscle. I have seen a fantasic improvement in my own body just doing the pushups, but i'm worried that if I hit a plateau, what do I do then? Do I keep doing as many pushups reps as possible in order to break that plateau? This is a typical upper body workout for a day... 3 sets of regular pushups 3 sets of elevated diamond pushups 3 sets of elevated regular pushups 1 set of pull ups 1 set of weighted regular pushups 3 sets of the bicep curl 3 sets of the 12 week ab program I don't usually do this routine in that order, but you get the jist of how i train.....I'm not looking to get really big, just a good, beefy lean physique....any thoughts, ideas.....:dumbbell: My question is |

hey buddy
I do martial arts and we do about 200 pushups a class and they are defintely great! Great for developing the upperbody and arms especially. One thing that I will tell you is that you will plateau, your muscles will get used to the workout, so keep changing up the types of pushups you are doing. Also change up the type of pullups you are doing.. wide, inside ect. |

Ultimately you will need to use weights to get all cut up. - Mike-------------- I am that which must be feared, worshipped and adored. The world is mine now and forever. No one holds command over me. No man. No god. I am a beast and that is enough. |

yeah mmaibohm is right, eventually you will need wieghts
but for now here are some other pushups you can do... Staggered pushups... one hand is ahead of the other one.. do 10 or so then switch put the other hand out farther Side to side pushups... Spread out your arms farther out on your sides. Do the pushup to the right side then to the left side, keep alternating tricep pushups ... like normal pushups but put your hands right close to your body, right beside your chest on each side finger tip pushups knuckle pushups there are more.. there some to give u a start |

Another good push up, is the plyometric push up, just simply add a clap when you get to the top of the push up, the idea is to push up off the ground with as much force as possible without breaking the rhythm, this is a very good push up, adding a clap will add extra strain on your delts, pecs and tri's, as you need to use quite a bit of force to get up off the ground to get the clap in.

so what about shoulder development?
You say you look better but can you gain muscle- Yes you can with push ups etc... But definition and all that will give you an appearance of being bigger anyway so compliment your chest with some shoulder routines. Cheap equipment? Try to buy a set of dumbbells, failing that push against a door frame at various angles for like sets and reps- dips between two chairs.. Adding shoulder routines along with chest can only assist with a look of bigness |

Try this: get yourself some rope the cheap nylon twist will do cost about £2.00 then get yourself a plastic bucket £1.00
Total £3.00: now make a rope harness for the bucket. Fill the bucket with soil and do some up right rows if you have got something sturdy to lye on off the floor you can even do some triceps extensions if you can find a sturdy bar you could double up on the buckets and do shoulder presses and bench presses and bicep curls. Be inventive, you probably spend your money on other activities at the moment but when you start to see results from your make shift weights you will be motivated to spend your money on improvements. Push-ups and pull-ups will do a certain amount but you can’t substitute the mass that heavy resistance training gives you. If you look hard enough you will find things that you can adapt for equipment, I had to do this when I started out. I’ve got 5 kids and believe me when you have put clothes on there back, shoes on there feet, food in there bellies and a roof over there head, there aint a fat lot left for gym equipment. I even use my kids, put them on my shoulders and run around acting like a prat; they get to play with Dad while I get to work out. Remember where there’s a will there’s a way. Good luck |
