I am not sure what was wrong in my previous posts, they all came blank.Anyways my questions was:- i am going to start cutting up and lose some fat for a few months and just wanted to know if it is worth taking protein supplements during this time, since anyways i would be losing muscle and there won't be any chance for gaining muscle, except they could be taken for minimising the muscle loss..but then can be done with normal foods;I am asking cuz protein supplemets are quite expensive and just wanted to get their total benefits.hope you'll could help me out...

If you can get your protein from regular foods then you don't need to supplement. Actually, protein supps are not that expensive if you consider them to replace food you would normally buy. Most of them cost about $2 per serving...which costs a lot less than your average protein-rich meal.

Actually, it does neither...provided you are getting enough protein from other sources. For example, since you weight around 176 pounds, if you are already consuming 176 grams (or more) of protein per day, additional protein is not required.

Does this make sense?

tboy your post workout whey does both. You need to make sure whats in it as far as carbs and sugars go. If you can meet the rest of your nutritional needs with whole food, thats better.

ok..then the protein you are getting say from whole foods, what does that do in the CUTTING PHASE?makes muscle or minimises it?
And if im not getting my 176 gms of protein during cutting?should i go in for a supplement?cuz i heard that during the cutting phase no matter how much protein you have muscles do not grow there is only muscle loss in that phase.

Tboy , hopefully Robert will weigh back in here. I think uopn re reading that we are saying similar things. You MUST get the 176g protein one way or another. Some folks reccommend 1 to 1.5 grams per body weight. I use a post workout whey to insure that I get enough.

As to gaining muscle during cutdown, one of our moderators BB1 just set a personal lift record while in cutdown for a competition. This tells me that it is possible. I have reduced body fat while increasing my lifts so that also tells me it is possible.

The protein thing can be confusing and I hope this was helpful. Robert??? Bail me out here if I have made a mess.

Actually, I found it very difficult to get 1.5g/protein per lb of lean body weight during my cutting phase before competition. I would have a meal replacement protein shake right after every workout, and a protein-only shake just before going to sleep. I would also have a protein-only shake along with my flax-seed oil when I was at work.

It's very hard, and very expensive, to eat a protein-rich meal every 3 hours...

That why I use protein supplements.

Thanks for weighing in here Adrian and Charlie. The question was actually a misnomer and when I read it, I understood it to be "is additional or supplemental protein necessary during the cutting phase."

tboy, for what it is worth, BB1 and Robert turned me on to having cottage cheese as a late night snack. It is high protein and actually congeals in the stomach and as a result, it "slow releases' overnight.

Yeah, Charlie is right, Cottage Cheese is one of the best protein sources just before bed. It takes longer for the body to digest it, which results in giving your body a constant supply of protein while you sleep. That way your body will not go for your hard earned muscle for protein.

Also, it is possible to gain minimal amounts of muscle while cutting up...say for 15 lbs. of fat loss, you might gain 2-3 lbs. of lean muscle mass.

Good Luck!
