Haha. I love play on words. It does actually makes me sick.

I don't know why, but whenever I do HIIT, or any exercise that gets my heart rate up near maximum I sometimes get sick the next day. Its always the same illness: A sore, inflamed throat (mucus included - sort of like a watered down throat/chest cold). It rarely gets bad, but it does make me feel crappy and hinders my work-out intensity.

I know its my cardio thats doing it, but I don't know why! I never thought I over did my cardio as I never do more then 12-20 minutes each time, and only sometimes do HIIT (maybe twice times a week).

Could bring my heart rate up like that lower my immune system enough to make me sick? Anyone have suggestions on what I could do about it (i want to keep doing HIIT occasionally)

odd. Are you staying hydrated and breathing through your nose? Are you exercising in a dusty environment?
Higher levels of exertion can suppress the immune system, but I wouldn't think that just 12-20 minutes would do it.

Hmmm... I am very good at staying hydrated, but the breathing through the mouth thing could be it. Its pretty dry where I live (I can tell my knuckles are always cracking) and I have a bad habit breathing through my mouth when running or sleeping.

Though until know I didn't realize I should be breathing through my noce while running. I should give that a try.

Thanks

I tend to gasp for air through my mouth when I really push myself on HIIT and I will notice a throat irritation, but not for long. And I usually down the H2O during the rest phase of the HIIT too and that helps.

I am working at it, my problem with HIIT is that I quit smoking (16 years heavily) after in November and I feel like I can't get the air into my lungs. I hope it will get better, and I am just going to keep at it until it does.

I tried going to the gym sick and did I ever get a lesson in stupidity. Not only were my lifts crap, but the following day I found myself to sick to even get out of bed. I have decided to take the next several days off from training, as I have been going for about 8 weeks straight anyway.

This should give me lots of time to rest up and recover from my illness.
