What are the the best exercises to do when you want to lose your gut and tighten it up? I have heart trouble and I don't want to cause any harm to myself while working out.

You can do any type of abs, crunches, hanging abs, V sit ups etc etc but to tighten up the gut, flatten the abs.....the best and only way is to reduce bodyfat. Its 80% diet.

Does pilates and yoga really help to shape you up and flatten your tummy?

Anything you do that involves the stomach area in exercise helps. Lots of folk here swear by pilates. Yoga involves breathing and holding positions that would certainly help as well. Have you looked at the FT abs program??? BTW welcome to FT.
