Is it not good to work out an an empty stomach? I've heard you may burn some muscle for fuel? Could someone explain why or why not to work out on a empty stomach. It's not an option to eat 1-1.5 hours before I work out since I'm already getting up at 5:45 AM. Getting up at 4:30 AM to eat Corn Flakes is just asinine. But at the same time I want to build muscle mass and not burn it! Any other serious early-morning bodybuilders out there?

I have heard different stories as well. My understanding is that not eating before working out will result in burning more fat more quickly, BUT if you do not have the fat to burn, you will cause your body to turn to your muscle for fuel. This would in turn be counterproductive to your working out. I am an early bird as well. I am interested in hearing what the experts have to say...

well, i'm no expert myself, but i've heard some experts say that you actually burn your muscles first if you work out on an empty stomach... the reason why is because it's easier for your body to use muscles for fuel than it is to use fats...
if i were you, though, i'd drop the corn flakes and start eating some egg whites, tuna fish, chicken breasts or something like that (high in protein) and making sure you take in a bit of carbs too... and make sure you drink your water as well...

Im more comfortable and lift alot more if I lift on an empty stomach especially since I lift in the morning I usually wake up w/ a weak stomach and dont like to eat breakfast til around 11 or so and I usually workout around 9ish.
