There are many ways to quit. Some have had luck with the gum, patch, the pills and cold turkey. You need to find what works for you.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it is gone past me I will turn to see fear's path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain

Here is what worked for me. I put all of my cigarette butts in a gatorade bottle and I looked at them and thought to myself "I am putting this stuff in my body" I havent touched a cigarette since. The first week was the worst, and it is still hard if I am having a few drinks.

Get one of those animals like Charlies...I think it's a pig or somethin. Seem's to have made Charlie stop!

On a serious note, if you are doing cardio, and find you are having a hard time, and taking cigartte breaks (like I use to) that will help you quit.

Charlie how long has it been for you?

10 days, hypnosis really made it bearable. Beelzabubba buffalo helped too.

there is only one way to quit smoking.
STOP.
Yes by all means use whatever tricks you can such as patches, imitation cigarettes, chewing gum whatever, but just don't pick one up light it and inhale.

I'm now on day 59. When I want one i do my best to distract myself from the urge and gradually I have been having less urges, still want one though........
It's tough, ask my wife!

Do ten push ups everytime you want to smoke.

I quit in 1996 and can't imagine why I ever had such a filthy, smelly, invasive habit!!!

Think about how nasty the inside of your lungs look.
Or go and visit the emphysema ward at a local hospital.

Do something physical everytime you have the urge to smoke - you will eventually replace a bad habit with a good one.
Good luck, it is tough, but you CAN do it if you set your mind to it.

It has been close to 10 years for me. What helped me was a combination of the nicorette gum and that herbal gum. It was very difficult, but I haven't touched one since and actually stay away from 2nd hand smoke as I can no longer tolerate the smell.

I don't know if I am comfortable with using hypnosis to quit. Having someone in my mind and being able to do anything they want to me mentally worries me. The side affect worry me too.

Its been called replacement therapy. Every time you want to smoke,
do something else. Chew gum concentrate on how to unwrap each piece.
Keep your hands busy when you get cravings. Its a physical addiction
as well as a mental addiction...Good Luck, Drink water...

I like JMLCMT's approach-makes sense 2 me.

Its been 3 months for me now and honestly it has been a difficult 3 months. I still have moments where I want one. But I dont really. I imagine what it would taste like and decide against it. Its just the habit that I am missing now, I know that. In the beginning though, just remember when a craving hits, if you wait it out, it will pass. 5 minutes at the most. Distract yourself, read a book, go for a walk, call a buddy, DRINK A GLASS OF WATER. Just wait it out. It will pass and every day the cravings become less and less. Before you know it a whole day will go by and you wont have thought about it once. And just think of the benefits. You dont stink, you are healthier, you save money, and you dont stink. LOL. Good luck to you.

I quit smoking 6 1/2 years ago. May 18, 1997 to be exact. I really didn't want to - I liked smoking. Sometimes it felt like a good friend. But I quit smoking because I hated the thought that anything had that kind of control over me that I would structure my entire life around it. That really pissed me off.
I followed the Smokenders program from the book written by the woman who started it. But, the last few days, I said "forget it" and smoked up a storm (cloud).
How have I remained a nonsmoker this long?
Before and after I quit, I asked everyone I knew that had been a smoker or had quit and gone back to it what made them start again.
90% of the time, they answered that they thought they could have "just one." I learned from that, that there is no such thing as "just one" when it comes to smoking. Therefore, for these almost seven years, my motto has been "I'm a puff away from a pack a day." I also stayed away from drinking for about 6 months afterwards, fortunately broke up with my smoking boyfriend about 4 months after quitting.
Also, I found I experienced such massive withdrawal anxiety, stress, etc. that I swore I would never go through that again. It was downright frightening.
Unfortunately, I also replaced cigarettes with food, and which is what brings me here.
At first, I lost weight, but then made the mistake of telling myself that I had to worry about staying off cigarettes, so could eat whatever I wanted. 25 pounds later ...

I've just quit smoking the first of Jan. What has helped me with the craving is sucking on a suger free lollipop. It helps with the habit of putting someing in your mouth. I started with the patch for two days but after that i come off completely. I also use shelled sunflower seeds. It helps alot to but be carefull cause they're really high in fat. They also have suger free candies you can chew on.
Don't give up and like mizmotivation said, don't think you can have just one because you can't. That what happened to me the first time i tred to quit. It only lasted one week. So believe me, you will feel the stress, anxiety, and withdrawls but your reward in the end is worth all the trouble.

I was a 3 packer for 28 years and went COLD TURKEY when I buried my MOM from complications from her years of smoking and lack of exercise. It is a very addictive habit to break. I did not try any off the OTC aids. I think it was the image of my MOM lying in the hospital bed with less than 10% of her lung capacity and could not speak that did it for me.I have been smoke free for almost 18 months and workout 6 days a week and feel 1000% better. If you read what kinds of junk fillers and poisons they are putting in cigs today it ought to be illegal.Of course when I quit I gained 15lbs, so I hit the gym at a whopping 250lbs. Im now at 205 and feel great. Anything can be achieved if you have a positive mind set.

let's do the math.
17 months smoke free. 3 packs($10.50) x 510 days = $5,355

that's a pretty good incentive............

jwagoner you ARE an inspiration. I am now at 70 days...who's counting and like Charlie I'm leaping buidlings!
Stalled on my weight loss kick, but put that down to Thanksgiving, Xmas and New Year festivities, but have improved my cardio abilities quite darmatically. Weekend runs I get through six miles at a decent pace 42 minutes, while my midweek charges are 3 miles, now consistently at 17 & 1/2 minutes. My HIIT routine is getting faster and faster and I'm feeling less fatigued on completion.

Yeeeeeeeeeha...as Charlie noted FREEEEEEEE
