What do calisthetics do? I've heard of people using calisthetics and no weights to look ripped. But I've also heard they are limited in effectiveness. I know crunches and pullups heve their place. How effective are pushups? Is there a reason I should do them? How do people look cut by jut using calisthetics?

froshman, I suspect that if there are people who look buff and cut using only calisthenics it has to do with genetics and youth. The only way to stay that way for a lifetime is proper diet and proper exercise. I think most people will lose the physical perfection as they age.
Like I said in my profile, when I was in my 20's I could lose 5 lbs just by skipping a meal. That won't last forever. A healthy lifestyle will.

Calisthenics can be used as warm up or cool down on weight training days. They are limited in that the maximum resistance is a percentage of your bodyweight (unless you strap on some weights).
They are also good for those who don't use weights at home but want to adopt an exercise program.

Calistenics also makes for a good cardio work out

So if I do pushups they do nothing to build or maintain my pecs?

no, they help. Trust me. I do tons of push ups and not even on a regular basis and it has done a number on my chest. Which osn't that good because I am a woman. My boobs have actually shrank because of push ups and bench pressing. So, yes, they do help.
