I know that getting protein in the system is important especially after a workout. Would drinking a protein shake while working out be advisable? Is there a particular brand that mixes well with juice or water? I normally mix with milk but I don't want to bring milk to the gym (the concoction is nasty and I don't want to chance it getting warm).

There is some research that shows a protein/glucose combo during training can be anabolic/anticatabolic. But this is sketchy, and best post training. There is tons and tons of research that verify this. The immediate problem with doing the above is that though cortisol is your enemy most of the time, it does need to be there for muscle breakdown to rebuild from. Without getting scientific here in either aspect, opt for post training. Besides, some folks have a problem with getting a bit nauseated with "eating" during training. And, another reason is digestion process during training will take needed blood flow and energy from lean tissue process.

I might add a note to the above, the one time that taking in "food" during training may be at competition time, when calories are very tight, bodyfat is very low, and when breakdown of muscle is the last thing you want. Muscle sparing is of essence here.
