On Tuesday, Federal Trade Commission Chairman Timothy Muris and U.S. Health Secretary Tommy Thompson called on newspapers, magazines and TV networks to voluntarily reject all advertisements that claim to:
> Cause weight loss of 2 pounds or more week after week without diet or exercise. > Block absorption of enough fat or calories to lose substantial weight. > Cause substantial weight loss by wearing something on the body, or rubbing a cream into the skin. “Unfortunately, there are way too many ads for scientifically impossible weight-loss products in the popular media,” Muris said. “The media should institute screening programs to ‘red flag’ deceitful weight-loss ads and refuse to run them.” Muris said he had met with media executives and trade associations to make the case that they should voluntarily refuse such ads. He said associations representing U.S. newspapers, magazine publishers, broadcasters and cable TV operators had all agreed to make the list available to their members. The agency also issued a 35-page report that concluded losing weight by using creams, wraps, devices and patches are ”not scientifically feasible.” -------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... |

geeeeeeezzzz every magizine I pick about health and fitness is loaded with these ads. I think that if a person is dead serious about losing weight there is no better way to do that and that is the natural way with proper diet and exercise. My opinion is that all these weight loss pills and supplements are just a crutch to a "wanna be" short term dieter. Weight loss should target 1 to 1 1/2 lbs per week weight. Above that you will be burning valuable muscle for energy. Hard work and reduced caloric intake...........its just that simple......speed is not the answer. You can boost your metabolism with diet and exercise. I've lost 40lbs in the last 12 months with no pills or supplements. I wish these snake oil doctors would get a real job!!!!!!

Is everyone saying that I cannot lose 10 lbs in 48 hrs by drinking some red junk? Now I am lost and do not know what to do. I guess I have to go back to taking the pills that swell inside your stomach to make me feel full

The way I see it is...if a product is that great does it really need all that advertising?

I think any product that actually works should be advertised...that's how to make money from it. The thing that gets me are those products that don't work and are advertised very heavily!-------------- **_Robert_** Pain is temporary; glory is forever! |

I like the ones that guarantee weight loss at the cost of $150.00 for a 30 day supply...Geez, they better work!
If it worked that well, I would be afraid that I would get so thin that when I took a healthy crap; I might just fall down through my asshole and choke myself to death. |

Sorry about that taurie....Thin, huh; I don't think I will ever be thin; always been chubs, chunky, or as my wife nicely puts it, fluffy...Heck, I was 12 pounds when I was born, my mom still gives me the evil eye everytime I see her, and my dad just plain won't talk to me...All I know is that I have to eat clean, do cardio, and of course, the resistant training...I was athletic in Highschool, and in pretty good shape, but all has gone to hell, and there is no one to blame but myself. So, now it is also up to me to be disiplined enough to do the above so that I can strive to be the best I can be....
CRAP!!!!What the heck did that have to do with this post...Geez, got off on a tangent again, sorry.... Weight loss supplements have done nothing for me except take my money. Maybe I haven't found the right one, or am not willing to spend $150 for a 30 day supply.... Well, off to walk off some steam.... |

What gripes me is the fact that ads such as these take advantage of people who really desire to lose weight. Now we here at ft know that there are no shortcuts, that losing weight means applying sound nutritional and training principles coupled with plain old hard work. It takes commitment which if anybody has noticed is running in short supply in our society today. No commitment to job, relationship, family, health, etc. The great majority of folks look for a shortcut in every aspect of life. So when your favorite mag or some 'Dr' in a slick ad says take a couple of pills to solve your problem people jump to it. I thought that there were laws against false advertising. I can't tell you how many people, and most of you know what I'm talking about, when they ask me how I've lost weight or what I'm doing to look so 'good' and I spell it out exactly like we do here at ft, the conversation takes an abrupt u-turn. These are the same types who would spend $100 on a bottle of pills in a heartbeat. It just blows me away. I guess that's why we need to keep testifying about the gospel of health. Sorry for the rant. Had to get it off my chest and I thought I would give my wife and friends a break today.

Hi, my name is Jeff and I'm a weight loss product supplement buyer. (crowd: Hi Jeff).
I too am one of the "fluffy" as fryer's wife so aptly puts it. I've always been considered chubby and have been on Jenny Craig back in the 90's and have bought most of the name brand products with the same result....I'm still fluffy. The problem is people are always looking for that quick fix (see: fast food) without being willing to work for it. That's why the people you meet gamble make their u-turn. They are expecting you to say that you've taken the latest pill and the weight magically disappeared overnight. As for fale advertising laws, only if the product does not do what the manufacturer says it will do in all cases or if the ingredients they claim are in it can't be found. The ads don't tell you that the person was being helped by a trainer or by steroids. The product does contain the ingredients listed, but they don't work for everyone. If you look really close, you'll see the fine print that says the results are exceptional and not everyone will lose like these people did. Or something similar in legalese. I've personally sworn off weight loss pills for a variety of reasons and am content to get the job done through my workout, diet and the great people here. Wow, I feel much better. -------------- The meek shall inherit the Earth, but the strong and muscular will carry them through it! That which does not kill me can only make me stronger. |
