You know, those pull up thingies. My FT program called for me to do those today and guess what guys? I couldn't even do ONE! SHEEEEESH!!! Instead of beating myself up I have decided that I will turn this into something good and really work hard to get to 5 of them. Is there another excercise I can do to help me be able to do the Wide Grip Chins to front? Or is it like pushups, some people can do them and some people can't and the only way to do them better is practice them? Charlie - my pride and ego are bruised, be nice, I am sensitive today. :-(

Peace baby, My recent surgery won't permit me to do them either. Cable pulldowns help and a lot of gyms have assisted chin machines. I alsa only have free weights and a crappy cable machine that bends at 140 lbs. Most of the back exercises will boost you toward chins. They will happen one at a time.

Wide Grip Chins...GREAT exercise for people who can do the damn things. Hell just hanging there thinking about doing them brings great pains to the ole shoulder working its way down to the armpits. I don't know about you, but the size of my armpits are perfectly fine at the moment. I also tried these damn things-couldn't do them. Thought maybe, negatives may be good...Hmmm, got up on a stool, grabbed onto the bar as hard as I could, and slowly bent my knees to see how long I could hold my chin above the bar, and slowly take it down to the bottom. Hmmm, didn't work at first, but at least I was able to scratch the top of my foot without bending over..
Anyway--Wide Grip pulldowns with the lat machine-different grips, and don't forget your forearms...Good luck!
Sincerely,
Some Day I'll Pull My Fadazz up

I read your post and had to chuckle. Do I ever remember my first day under that darn bar and how it humiliated me!
So sharing your pain, I'll share a technique that allowed me to progress.
Once you are suspended concentrate on pulling with your back, I know it's weird & difficult to describe, but rather than trying to pull with your arms, focus on your back until you get some lift, follow through with your arms and before you know it you'll be up.
I agree that the pull down is a suitable alternate, once again use the back muscles to bring down the bar, amazing results.

Pauline, you inspired me. I've been using my surgery to shy away from some exercises. Because of this post I completed 2 sets of 3 pullups tonight... felt great. Not much but its a start.
