Hello. I have a few questions, so here I go:
I'm only 16, so of course I'm struggling for confidence as any 16 year old female would. I am really skinny. I actually came to this site to gain weight. I was wondering though, is it possible to gain muscle mass in one area, and lose it in another? I am definitely not confident about my body, so I'm doing something about it. I have a small frame, with no butt or breasts, my legs are also to small. Another thing I'd like is to have a more, curvacious body. Anybody have any suggestions? |

Hello seriousteen and welcome to ft. In general, you will gain muscle mass in those areas where you work them. For example, if you go into any gym you will probably see guys with huge chests and arms but small legs. Why? They work those areas almost exclusiveley. As for losing fat you will lose fat all over your body. There's no such thing as spot reduction desite claims and gizmos offered on TV and in magazines. As for your situation: You say that you are skinny. Several things come to mind. First, how is your diet? Do you eat alot or do you eat a little? Do you eat good nutritious foods or 'junk'? Also, look at your parents, particularly your mom and grandmother. Are they 'skinny'? This may give you some indication of your body type. The key to gaining weight is to eat alot of good, clean, nutitious foods. And eat often, 4-6 meals a day. The second part is to begin an exercise program that builds muscle. You don't want what you eat to turn to fat as that defeats the purpose. Search the message boards for info on gaining weight. Lots of ideas there on all aspects of gaining weight and building muscle. And also remember, your body is still growing and maturing but you can help it by developing good eating and fitness habits.

Great advice, agamble. I only have one thing to add. You are only 16. Your body is still developing and changing. And for us females that doesn't stop. You may already have a curvaceous body in there just waiting for it's time to bloom. Don't be discouraged. -------------- ~Victoria~ ...Do not be discouraged; everyone who got where he is, started where he was.--anon ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |

Hey! Thanks for the advice! It's hard not to be discouraged. Waiting until I'm married and have children seems like such a long wait. It's hard just waiting for my body to develop. And to agamble, well, I eat A LOT! My friends all marvel at how much I can eat and how skinny I stay. Mostly what I eat is "junk" though. I eat cereal every morning before school, lunch (whatever that may be) come home and eat, and I usually snack out for the rest of the day until dinner (which is pretty healthy). I really want to start this program to see if it will work for me. I'm anxious to start gaining weight and seeing my butt have a little more to it. LOL. There's only one problem, how can I keep track of my carbohydrates, calories, fats, protein and such at school? It's hard to keep track because I never know what I'm going to have for lunch, and we get it served to us, so I never know how much of what is in what I'm eating. Is there anything I can do about that? You guys have been amazing so far. Thanks for the help and support!

I know what you mean about keeping track of your nutrition at school. I am a teacher and used to eat in the lunchroom. Gained a ton of weight. Since that is what you are trying to do, I would eat there and just estimate the macros for now. Later on you may have to do as I do which is pack your lunch. One thing you need to start doing is reading food labels. Start to get an idea of what is in the food you eat. It won't take long before you will have a good idea about the content of most foods. Get a nutrition counter and a notebook. Take body measurements and write down everything you eat. Follow the plan and record measurements every 4 weeks. Every week evaluate your food intake. Go to the supplement section and read a post entitled must read by bb1fit it has some helpful information about diet. Stick to your goal, become informed, search for ideas/suggestions, eat well, exercise, and above all have patience. I'm rooting for you. Good Luck.

ya i'am also 16. you need to eat high calories, carbs, and protein. You have to eat 6 meals per day, I use to weigh 80 pounds but for months i been eating alot, like its my job and i gained like 40 pounds, now i weight 120. my goal is to get to 170 atleast. But of course I workout 3 times a week, i do chest area and shoulders, forearm, abs, triceps on mondays, tuesday is off, wednesday i work on my back, abs, bicep, traps, thursday is off, and friday i do on legs, butt, calves, and abs. sat and sunday is off.
My appearance use to be so skinny like i have no shoulders and my cloths where so loose, but now i have big chest back and everything, i look buffer lol. So ya... u gota keep eatin like its your job, and oh ya u should take some supplements to aid you but dont rely on them to much. |

I am sorry. I am not meaning to make fun honestly but I just had to laugh. You have all of the 20-30-40 year old woman killing themselves to look 16 again and then here we have two 16 year olds working like crazy to gain weight and get curves. You just never know do you? ;)
Oh to be happy with our bodies... |
