I want to start jogging in the morning mainly because i have seen it stated so many places that it's the best time if you want to burn fat. Now, what i need help with is to know how to prepare myself in the morning prior to running. SHould i eat or drink anything before i go out, or should i just wake up and run. Also, I have a bad tendancy to get those cramps on my side when i run, any way to help avoid this? Any help would be really appreciated, thanx.

Pasta before bed stocks you up on carbs, helps you run better. Always before cross country races we would eat a spagetti dinner at a restaurant the night before. When i go in the morning I eat a banana, then work out then run. Make sure before you run you take a few sips of water make sure you are hydrated. I don't believe there is anyway to avoid those cramps on the side, though i find massaging them while im running helps to break it up.

The cramps you are getting are known as "stiches" to runners. It can be caused by food you ate recently before running or your breathing... Try belly breathing...It's a MUST if you are serious about running... I learned it in HS and still use it today...Here's an explanation from a website...

Assuming the pain isn't from some food you recently ate, it might be a result of your breathing pattern. Try belly breathing and see if it helps. This involves taking in air and extending the stomach. An easy way to do this while running is to forcefully expel air and contract the stomach. The only option after that is to have the stomach expand as air comes in. Try this and see if it helps.

I have a 1 cup of coffee before running. I jog (SLOWLY!) about 1/4 mile. Then I stretch. When I start my run, I start slowly and build up to my 'pace'.

There is an excellent book called "No Need For Speed" by Bingham that is for beginning runners.

As for cramps...are you sure you're drinking enough water?

I`ve been a runner since 8 years ago. I can tell that if I`m just running 5k I don`t need to eat anything before running and don`t feel any cramp. If I don`t breath well then I feel that horrible pain at a side. If I`m doing larger than 10K then I`ll have a whole wheat cookie an hour before.
