Hi all!! I am following the FT Weight Loss and Tone plan on the intermediate level and go to the gym 4-5 times a week. I actually don't want to lose weight (I am 5'7" and 117 lbs) but instead want to tone the muscles I have and perhaps build a very little. So after the FT lifting program I always do 45 minutes of stair-climbing. However, I am concerned because I read in a previous post that cardio is detrimental to muscle toning....The question is why?? Is this true even if I do't follow a low-carb diet?

Cardio is derimental to muscle toning only when a large calorie deficit is present. This can be avoided by consuming an adequate amount of calories(especially carbs) preworkout & supplementing with BCAAs in between weights & cardio. However 45 minutes may be a bit too much unless you are training for distance running, 20-30 minutes at higher intensity would probably be more efficient for your paticular goals.

Ok, so this isn't the answer to your question, but...If you don't want to lose, why not try the progressive gains program instead of the weight loss one? You say you want to "tone", which basically means you want the muscles to grow.

Just my $0.02

Thanks for the advice plfitness and Kirby, and to answer your question, the first time I signed up for a FT program I tried progressive gains but I didn't like it because it had exercises that I was comfortable with, for example, I don't want to exercise my forearms. Also, the weights and reps were too much, so that is why I switched to something different. I don't want larger muscles than what I have now anyways (my bf says they're already too big), so basically I just want to maintain and define the ones I already have.
