Hi all,

If you have ALOT of weight to lose is it better to stick to cardio rather than weights or both? And ideally, how long should a cardio session last??

what is "ALOT" ? if u are seriously overweight - must reduce weight with proper diet and then try some kind of cardio combined with weight training

Depending on how much weight you want to lose that will make the difference in your workout. I am 55 years old and was 65 pounds overweight, I started a cardio and weight training program, and radically changed my diet. I do cardio for about 30 minutes, depending on the cardio I choose and weight train for 60 minutes. The weight is coming off VERY slowly because I am building muscle (a lot of muscle), but that is just fine!!!! If you feel like you can do cardio and weights do that because then you have the muscle to help burn the fat. If you can only walk, do that for as long as you can. It is better to walk 10 minutes 3 times a day than to do nothing.

The first thing one has to do when wanting to lose weight is to become smarter about the subject. Doing research for true fatloss is important. In doing this, you will find that it is your mind, daily habit breaking, diet, and exercise that can alter your weight. You have to get into the right set of mind before any weight can be lost. It may take you a few times to get it, but be persistent. Then you have to overcome your daily habits may it be, drinking a can of pop with your lunch, or having that little debbie after supper, or even cleaning your plate of every last morsel of food. Then you have to change your diet rid your household of things you don't need. You know what these are by common sense, and research. You have to take in a balance of fat, carbs, and proteins from healthy nutritious sources. You have to create a deficit in the calorie intake from the calorie output. You also have to spread these calories throughout the day, by eating every 2-6 hours. Then comes exercise, one does not need cardio to lose weight, just having a good diet alone will do the trick, then weight lifting would come next as it build lean muscle mass that will burn more calories at rest. Then if you still find that you are not losing enough weight, then slowly add in cardio as you can handle it. Good luck.

Ditto to the comments above.
I started out with a goal of losing 50 pounds. This after years of being relatively sedentary.
Initially I kicked off by assulting my diet, shortly thereafter started the exercise routine.
I kicked this off with light cardio and equally light weights. This was deliberate as I wanted to ease my body into being "used".
I found that walking for thirty minutes 4 times a week, was a good start and about two weeks later was into jogging, now 4 months later I'm up to 4 miles in 35 minutes.
Following my cardio I work the weights, I follow a routine advised by this website and am always cautious not to over extend myself, both from a weight and repetitions perspective.
What has been important for me: Is acknowledging that I am in it for the long haul and do not expect overnight results. In addition I have set realistic goals over a period of eight months, which I am achieving, perhaps a little faster than I expected, and that is OK.

Hope this helps.

babyg25,
My advise would be to start out slowly, walk ensuring that you perspire, watch your heart rate, not sure of the calculations to be working at the optimum, suffice to say don't overdo it. gradually as you get lighter you'll find the energy to break into a jog, do it, then reduce back to a walk and so on.
Be sure to comprehend that it will take time to shed the Kilos, be realistic and set goals that you are comfortable with. STICK with IT, it is HARD WORK.

my advice for cardio is do about 30 min..that is the average...those who wish to loss more and do about 60 daily but different times ..maybe a little in the morning walk during lunch and when you get home do your normal workout.....remember (Like so many of us) to loss weight you must burn off more caleries then you take in......that is the best way to loss weight......see how much caleries you can have for the amount of cardio, and weight lefting that you do and that way you can see how your body handles it.......small meals and snacks....beef jerky high in protien good for snacking, Snapple meal replacement 210 caleries 0 fat 7 grams of protein,,,apple has shown to help with weight loss if you eat it as a snack before every meal according to a nutrition study...

There is a big debate currently on whether or not cardio should be involved in a training program or whether other forms of training are sufficient to provide cardiovascular fitness. Two key points in this debate to remember are 1) the training should be specific to the desired adaptation & 2) cardiovascular training is not specific to certain exercises such as jogging or cycling. The first part is simple, if the client does not want or require the conditioning of an advanced aerobic athlete they should not train like one & extensive cardio is not necessary as long as the client maintains a cardiovascular fitness level sufficient with their daily needs. As far as the second part, localized vascular efficiency in muscle tissue is crucial for proper function as the muscle develops, however running is not going to cause a significant adaptation in any other muscle but the legs. Cardio is not based on a specific movement such as running, it is based on low resistance, high volume muscular contractions prolonged over a period of time along with a above normal sustained heart rate. Therefore any movement can become a cardiovascular exercise depending on how it is performed. In addition the majority of articles recently published on the lack of need for cardio where in regards to whether or not it is necessary for fat loss. The answer to this is that the only effective method for fat loss is to burn more calories than you consume, of course cardio will assist you in burning more calories, but so will weight training & other physical activities. Therefore in conclusion, cardio is necessary for conditioning the cardiovascular system but it is only one of the tools we have to increase overall fitness & reduce body fat levels.
