I'm interested to see everyones opinion on this one. There is a rather big debate going on regarding this practice. It is believed that by not going past 90' on pressing movements that the shoulders are less likely to develop an injury. The theory behind this is sound but the argument is weather or not it allows sufficient range of motion for both functional strength & muscular gains. So far the only thing everyone has agreed upon is that you should train in a range that is confortable for you wether it is only 90' or a full stretch. A trainers primary goal is the clients safety therefore the trainer is giving very sound advice & personally I dont feel that not going below 90' will be detrimental to progress. However in my opinion this applies to heavy pressing movements & I believe that they should also be used in conjunction with full range movements(such as dumbell presses) for total functional strenght & muscle fiber recruitment, hope this helps.

From personal experience, on shoulder press I go down to my chest--no injuries yet . . . That's where it feels right for me. I go full range with less weight though (to failure)--not trying to show off for anyone. I'd imagine a good stretch is all one needs. Nothing scientific here, just personal experience.

When working with Dumbells, I usually go 90 degrees(or slightly below) on Inc. Bench, Bench, Shoulder press, and inc. and reg. flys.

If you are lifting heavy with dumbells, it is possible to really mess your shoulders up if you go down too low, too fast.

When I work with Barbells, I go to my chest. There is more control with barbells. Also, with a barbell, you cant go too much further than your chest..lol.

Hope that helps
