after a good workout, i'm beat. so beat that if i don't consciously look at my watch when i'm laying on the ab bench between sets, i'll fall asleep. my body is so peaceful and serene and ready to rest. it feels so cleansed after the workout like i've worked out the toxins and stress from my body.
i've read that you shouldn't eat for an hour after workout to keep your metabolism higher for longer. but this past week i've eaten a banana right afterwards for replenishment so i didn't fall asleep on the 45min ride home. it made a big difference in energy level. is this the best type of food to eat after workout? or is there something better?
i have a lot of ?s about whether to eat or not and what right after workouts. there's a lot of conflicting info and wondered what everyone elso thought. i really don't understand the high gi and low gi concept, so please instead of using these terms-give me some food examples.

Main Question: Is there a group of foods that are best to eat right after a workout? And if so what are they?

You must eat after a workout, within an hour is best. During this window, your body is starving for nutrition as a result from your training, so feed it. What I have found to be the best is any meal with a 2:1 Carb to Protein ratio. The protein should be readily absorbable by the body to begin tissue repairs, such as whey, and the carbs should be a blend of simple and complex sugars in order to replenish your glycongen stores rapidly.

If you don't want to drink a post workout shake, I would suggest foods such as cottage cheese, yogurt, malt, milk, and fruit.
