Hey
im deadlifting only about 1.3x my own body weight, with a belt for support.
But i struggle to actually hold onto the weight
so after i lift it about 5 times, my grip starts to give with each rep which means i have to go down alot quicker and often slam the weights on the ground
i dont really feel much strain on the rest of my body
the next day my back is pretty sore though (with sometimes a tinge of pain)
should i be doing a lower weight?

I actually had that problem with standing calf raises, and with barbell shrugs (my only shrug option)
its just such a big heavy weight to hold for such a long time and the arm strain is the limiting factor.
deadlifts i dont get that cos its just in quick bursts

junkrock, in your case, focus on grip exercises and getting them stronger. Once you excel in your grip strength, then you'll be able to excel in your deadlifting. As an alternative for now until your grip gets better, lower the weight a bit so that you're able to dish out 8-10 reps for "x" amount of sets without your grip giving out. Always keep yourself in check and keep perfect form.

I generally recommend that you tough it out.
Try working on your grip strength by doing 'Farmer's Walks' on days that you don't use them much. To do those, grab and pretty heavy pair of dumbbells and just walk around with them. That will get you used to holding on to heavy weights for long periods of time. Generally you don't want your grip strength to lag too far behind the rest of your body.

u could also use lifting straps, they work great if your having problems holding the weight. but yes, try to improve on your grip stength.
